thanks Jim, I appreciate the information. All three guns are in pristine condition, now I can make sure they are insured right.

Serial numbers ran from 220000 in 1907 to 261493 in 1940. Book does not narrow it down any further.

Approximate age?

I recently acquired a stainless 4" model 67-4 # cdt532x, it is in perfect condition, paid 400 for it.

Also just got a blue model 10-5 # d4806XX, it is in good shape, other than what appears to be a bit of holster wear on the end of the barrel. Paid 300 for it.

Both guns shoot so good it amazes me.
Any idea of the age of these 2?

Thanks,
Jim

Just got a 686 no-dash 4". Anyone know the approximate age of the gun? S/N is ACU7XXX. From what I gather it has to be between '80 and '86...but that's a large window.

TIA

Mod 28-2 serial number n22383x
The N200000 numbers ran from 1974 to 1977.
The 28 was an slightly more economical version of the model 27. It featured a matte blue vs bright blue finish and lacked the checkering along the length of the top of the gun.

model 67-4 # cdt532x
model 10-5 # d4806XX
cdt532x = late 1999.
d4806XX = SN's ran from D420001 in 1972 to D51000 in 1973.

Right around 1930.

serial # C886XXX
It's a model 10 if steel frame or model 12 if aluminum frame.
The model number should be stamped on the frame just in front of the cylinder, only visable with the cylinder opened. See pic.
Serial numbers ran from C810533 in 1966 to C999999 in 1967.

Jim

This is a model 629-1.

New old S&W

I just picked up a 66-1 SN# 69K5xxx. I hope it's worth the $375 OTD I paid for it today. Any help on its DOB would be appreciated.

Best Regards
RicMic

Unless it's beat to death, it's easily worth $375.

Outside is rough. No blueing left, several pits. Action is unbelievably smooth though. Thank you!

Ok I just purchased a pre-war 1905 .38spc m&p kframe revolver from aging show. I was looking for an older style revolver and was told that the one I bought was a good buy. He pointed out the frame had 5 screws and the newer models reduced the number used. I checked Wikipedia and other sources and only got more confused as it said the pre war 1::905 model apparently was made around 1946 and was the last type to be made without a model number as the name. Switch to model 10 I think. Was after old west revolvers between 1840-1900s. There wasn't much 'wild" west left by the 40s. The serial number on rge butt and cylinder says 503xxx. Any tell me more info? 1st s&w gun a
nd didn't know there was a book. Plus internet says +p works for my gun if it'd not as old as I thought. That true?

Thanks
Orion

It's a .38 Military & Police model of 1905, 4th change. SN 503XXX dates it to late 1920's.
It became the model 10 when S&W began assigning model numbers in 1957.
While it likely won't hurt it, S&W does not recommend +P ammo in pre model numbered guns.

Higway Patrol

New to the revolver forum. Someone asked you a question on an older S&W, I have the same question'

S&W 28-2 Highway Patrol 4" barrel SN#N532832

I know there is a book I could buy, but I am not a collector, just ran across this lovely pistol I know I am the second household it has been in, but not its age.

Thank yo for any help you may lend.
