My “COMBAT!” assortment

Whenever I posted my Tommy gun, references where made to “COMBAT!”, the 1960ies television series starring Vic Morrow as Sgt Saunders. I had never seen that series, guess it was not broadcasted in Switzerland (and I wasn’t born when it first aired).

Anyway I thought I’d check it out, and I am now hooked and 28 episodes into season 1 thanks to YouTube.

It also motivated me to find a nice M1 carbine (which I’ve already shown), and they are still quite cheap here in Switzerland.

Today was the perfect day to put my WWII US hardware together for a photo shoot.

The Thompson is a Savage made Auto Ordnance 1928 A1 made in 1941 and a British Lend Lease. It is GEG inspected.

The M1 carbine is an Underwood Elliott Fisher Company made in 1944 and it did not get the end of war or post war upgrades. It’s GHD inspected.

The Colt 1911 A1 was made in 1943 and GHD inspected

The Remington Rand is a 1943 made type II and is FJA inspected

The S&W Victory was also made in 1943, is also a British lend lease in .38 S&W and is also GHD inspected

I guess I really need a Garand now (and there’s a nice H&R for sale locally, although it’s a bit pricey).

And a BAR.

Combat! is available here on netflix dvd. Have been watching several seasons. The next season is bubbling up my list.

I envy you in switzerland. I have my own collection of WWII arms. But the Thompson and BAR are not in it. Without full auto they are pretty much neutered. I can't afford the full-auto versions of them. Instead I have 2 M1s, a 1903, and a 1917, plus a few rifles from the other side of the conflict.

To the OP:

That's a beautiful photo set of your WW2 collection.

The movie: "Last Man Standing," starring Bruce Willis, Christopher Walken and Bruce Dern, also has some nostalgic "Prohibition" fight scenes with 1911's, revolvers and Tommy Guns.

And, one of my favorite Clash songs: "Tommy Gun."

Did they have 30 round Carbine magazines in WWII?
I thought that 30 rounders were an M2, Korean War adaptation.

Thanks. I think I saw this movie decades ago so I’ll probably have to watch it again.

I am a big fan of the Clash and one of my biggest regret was when they came to town for a concert and I was abroad on holiday. They separated shortly after and I never got to see them live

My understanding is that they came with the M2 at the end of 1944. But I’ve been wrong before

My Dad was on Okinawa, running a AAF radio navigation sight.
He told me that he never saw a 30 round carbine mag. All the ones he brought with his carbine were 15 rounds. But Dad wasn't a infantry trooper.

Talking to several, sadly long gone veterans, some apparently got to the Army units towards the end of the war. Okinawa was mentioned, as was The Philippines.

I befriended with a 90 years old army tanker in Europe during WWII. He told me they were issued Tommy guns in their tank. Never used them as it was awkward to get them in and out of the tank. He didn't like the 45 either. He got a German p38 from somewhere and kept it in his shoulder holster. He just picked up 9mm from here and there. Never had to shoot the pistol in anger though. It wasn't regulation weapon. But the officers just looked the other way. He was a corporal made sargent.

He never saw any tanker garand.

I am old enough to remember watching that show when it first aired; along with Rat Patrol, and the comedy Hogan's Heroes, it was a great time for TV

Here the Thompson would probably cost more than $20,000 for a transferable one. M1 Carbines are around $1000 and so are many of the worn 1911s up to $5000 or even $10,000 for a particularly rare, nice example.

Very nice collection OP. Yep, I was addicted to Combat. No doubt it greatly influenced me. Of course I had this set from Mattel:

I too grew up watching Combat--I saw every episode, though I can't remember them all. Two I do recall were "Hills are for Heroes" and "the sniper" as being exceptional.

Nice collection, loved ‘Combat’ as a kid. Played a lot of army as a young kid in the early 60’s. I was the only one with a toy German helmet and an MP38. The kit also include spare mags in a holder and a ‘potato masher’.

I kind of wish I had kept my M1 Thompson, but in a fit of stupidity, I sold it to fund other firearms. I did sort of replace it with a MP40 though.

Very nice collection you have there OP.

Good point

Don’t see them offer for sale often here, and they are pricey considering the rusticity

Then there’s the Liberator, the worst money for sheet / stamp metal deal, pound for pound

You need an M1 Rifle. And no drum mag. 30 round Carbine mags were issued late in W.W. II.
Almost bought a BAR long ago. Had the money, but had just been laid off. Been crying ever since.

In 2009 I was offered a M1A for $800. Damn good price even back then. I had been out of work for more a year. I had the money, but I just couldn't.
