whats a good yote gun?

im gunna go coyote hunting in a week or two wich i dont do much, i have a 17hmr a 243 and a 270? those are a few of the smaller guns i own will any of these work? or do i need to get somthing like a 22-250 or a 223?

If you shoot the .243 as well as you do the .270 I would opt for the smaller pill... But the .17 is a bit light for all but the closest shots perfectly placed IMHO...

yah i was thinkin the 243 too, the 17 is just a hair on the light side and the 270 is just a lil too big..just wasent sure because i dont have very much experance with the coyotes

Any of the sub calibres (centerfire) .14, .15, .17, .19, .20 and of course the .22 if you're looking to preserve the hide at close distances, <300 yds...

.24, .25, .26, .27, .28 if you want to shoot them at long range >300 yds and preserve the hide or if you just want to eradicate them at close distances...

We were at the range last January and a friend had just finished sighting in his brand new, just finished being built (on an action and stock I gave him) .338/06 and we were having coffee when this grand daddy of all coyotes came by--bloody huge, he was...We at first thought it was a lobo wolf when it walked up to the 600M target stand...It had just lifted its leg and was starting to urinate on it, marking its territory, when a 300gr SMK took him in the front shoulder, exited the offside shoulder blade and hit the target stand, breaking the wooden post and toppling it on the coyote...Perfect winter coat with two small holes...

.22 WRM to 100 yds and .17 HRM to maybe 140 yds but that's it...

If you don't reload, Winchester (and others?) make a 55gr varmint load for .243. I reload mine- but man what a ride! If you can, grab a box of something lighter than 70gr and sight in about 1.5" high at 100 yards.

Too bad we can't do that at the range I frequent. They'd kick you out for life for shooting a fly!

Just to throw it out. Here in the East. Heavy brush. Most Coyotes are shot with a 12 gauge and number 4. If in heavy cover. Its going to be a quick shot. We use a 223 or 22-250. But always back it up with a shot gun.

as stated it depends on the hide. My designated varmint rifle is a .204 ruger but #4 buck in the 870 has been used alot especially on a friends farm. If I were you and you weren't looking for a good (and valide) excuse to buy another rifle use the .243. I've seen it have good results on them. If you don't care about the hide then it depends on the ranges. .270 will definately do the job. You'd have to be pretty picky with the load though if you wanted expansion. I've tried varminter bullets in a .308 and didn't really care for them. I prefer a rifle that's a good fit for the job not trying to fit a rifle into that role that really doesn't belong. I think .243 would fit the job but the question is are you just shooting to kill or do you want the fur. That makes it more tricky. Also, I had a post similar to this I believe last summer and got great responses if you care to pull it up as far as caliber comparisons.

If I were to grab a 'yote' gun from my varmint rifles, It would probably be my .220 Swift. Next up, is the .270 Win (100gr HPs). Next, would be my .243 Win. Last, would be my .22 WMR.

I wouldn't be after hides, though.

If you have a .270 and a .243, don't worry about getting something else. They'll be just fine. Just choose a bullet appropriate to saving hides, or not.

My wife has a .243 it works fine. I had a 22-250 I had to sell it was a real tack driver. Been using a Hornady 110 grain V-Max with my 30-06 just for playing around. I have a Ruger No 1A light sporter that is by far not a varmint rifle, but I was surprizied on how well it done once I got the load worked up. You can forget the pelts with it, just turns everything into a red mist.

Wildcatters have successfully designed cartridges all the way down to .08 caliber. (Successfully, is the key word. Experiments have been done all the way to .04 caliber.)

Most bores under .17 caliber are smooth, though. It is too difficult (or impossible) to rifle the tiny bores.

I forgot to mention- One of the reasons .14 caliber is gaining popularity, is that the bore can be rifled, now. It's expensive, but available.

You could not go wrong with any of these all-purpose varmit Cals.
Your .243 Win is more better! Don't expect to skin anything to sell.
I personally use my 30-06, got another friend who shoots 270. also
We don't use range finders, and most shots are close <200 yards.
Too many gadgets hurt you when a quick response is necessary.
Any rifle would work the 270 or the 243, I think the 17hmr is too light at 200+ yards.
Centerfires only for yote work for me.

they all will work... no need to go spend $ on a new rifle. spend the money on a good foxpro spitfire and you wont ahve a problem getting them withing range for any of those...

Your .243 will be fine,
I've killed them with just about every thing own and that is a bunch of calibers and a few shotguns. I don't worry about pelt damage, here in the deep south the pelt aren't very good and most have mange.

when someone asks me, "...out of ur 30 or so guns how many are varmit/yote guns" i always answer "o about 30 or so" u can cleanly kill one with any gun, but make sure you kno the guns limitations.
