Happenned along this old thread and thought I'd throw something in that wasn't mentioned yet. No doubt the .44 has some limitations compared to more powerful rifle cartridges. However, some states like my home state of Indiana do not allow hunting with centerfire rifle cartridges. For years we could only use shotguns loaded with slugs, muzzle loaders, or magnum handguns to hunt deer. However, two or three years ago Indiana passed a law to allow deer hunting with rifles chambered for magnum pistol cartridges. So if I wanted to hunt deer in Indiana with a rifle, I would have to pick the .44 mag over the 30-30. The strange thing about the Indiana law is that you can hunt with rifles chambered for magnum pistol cartridges, and although you can not hunt with a rifle chambered for rifle cartridges, you can hunt with a pistol chambered for a rifle cartridge. So if you want to hunt with a 243 Remington, or a 30-30, its ok as long as its in a pistol.
I think the boys down in Indianapolis might be spending a little too much time in the woods, or smoking a little too much of what grows there.
