748 for 7mm Rem Mag?
Hi all. Really like the forum and all the experience in reloading here. I purchased a used RCBS Rockchucker with plenty of goodies from an older gentleman about 16-17 years ago and have never regretted it. In fact, one of the best investments I've ever made. A great hobby and saves money as well. Can't beat that.
I load for 7mm Rem Mag, Ruger Model77 MkII, and have always used IMR 4831. I am pleased with this powder and it seems to give good performance as well as accurate out of my rifle. I know there are many suitable powders for 7mm but my question is this. Can 748 be safely loaded in 7mm Rem Mag? I've searched but have not found a recipe for this combination. That probably answers my own question but perhaps someone out there has an old recipe from years gone by. My reason for asking is I have a pound of 748 and nothing to use it in. The loads would only be used for plinking and velocity/accuracy are not a major concern in this case. All responses are welcome, even some bashing and head slapping if needed. I'm new here so I'm willing to pay my dues. peace RJ |

748 is pretty "fast" for 7mm R.M.
I think I'd try to swap that one can off for something more suitable instead of trying to force it. Maybe someone will come along with a "recipe." |

My 7mag also prefers 4831 - where I found a use for 748 was in my XP-100 chambered in 7mm BR - a much shorter and milder cartridge

748 isn't suitable for magnum Cartridges . I really doubt that you will find any data that says otherwise .

748 was originally developed for the 308 Winchester for military spec loads in SA and FA rifles. Stick with the 4831s for bullets 150 and heavier.

Thanks for the replies. I don't plan on doing anything experimental with the 748. I like my fingers, eyes, nose, and big ears too much! Not to mention my rifle. Just thinking that since 748 has been around for a while that maybe someone had heard of such a combo. My Speer no. 10 & 11 manuals have some loads using IMR 4895 which is close to 748 in the burn rate charts of my Speer and Hornady manuals. And some charts I found online actually have IMR 4895, H 4895, IMR 4320, and IMR 4064 as faster than 748. I'm thinking case volume is a big factor here.
Thanks for the trade offer GP100man. I'm currrently in the Charlotte area so that would be a long distance face to face. I'm somewhat of a GP100 man myself. I have a 4" stainless I purchased in the early 90's. This gun is the one I originally started reloading for. Well, I'm about out of IMR 4831. Thinking I'll try and get some this weekend. Also thinking of trying RL-22. Seems a lot of folks like it for their 7's. Peace RJ |

I use R22 for 120-162gr bullets.
I've used 4064 and 4350 with excellent results with 120gr.
