SSN's

Question about serial No.

If a firearm was made years ago, would it be required to have a ssn?

I am refering to 1930, and a private gun maker. (Custom guns).

Serial #s were made mandatory after the '68 GCA

There is an article about Smith & Wesson in this month's American Rifleman. As I recall, they did not start numbering their guns until the mid-thirties.
