308 dies to reload 30/06?

I'm wondering if I could use my 308 dies to load 30/06 rounds for my M1. Just set the ram height the distance difference between the rounds.

It would not be possible to size 30-06 brass with a 308 die. Even a 30-06 die not set up exactly right will give you problems let alone using 308 die.

I reload .30-06 and my friend reloads .308 and, although both are .30 caliber, they are not the same catridge. Either small base or full length sizing dies are recommended for reloading ammunition used in semi-automatics. Neck sizing only will result in chambering problems.

I neck size for three calibers fired in bolt actions and full length size for my one semi-automatic rifle. Please remember that neck sized cartridges are to be used in the same bolt action rifle due to fire forming of the case in that particular chamber.

I just asked this question to Dillon this evening as I wanted to buy only a single decapping die rather than a set.

The bullet seating and crimping dies should work fine. The decapping/resizing dies in .308 will not be long enough to accomodate a 30.06 case.

Budsboy,

.30-06 has a 35° shoulder, while the .308 has a 40° shoulder, so it is not just a shortened .30-06. Additionally, the taper of the sides are different, too. So, the two dies are not the same shape in the critical headspace determining area. It is not a compatible combination.

Lee, and, I think maybe Redding make universal decapping dies. Get one of these.

I thought the 30-06 had a 17*30' shoulder while the 308 had a 20* shoulder. A 308 with a 40* shoulder would be an Ackley would it not??

I need to full length resize also, so I bought a three die set from Dillon. This will also allow me to keep the entire set mounted on a tool head for the 550B press and eliminate manipulating the dies when I want to change calibers.

Spend $22.00 and get the right die...It will save you SOOOOOO many headaches. Also, I don't think the decap pin will make it down all the way through the case to eject the primer...Buy the right die set....Also, may want to consider a collet die to improve your case life.

For your autoloader, always full length resize. So in answer to your original question, no, you should not use a .308 Win die for resizing your 30-06 ammo.

I gave the full included angle (angle between shoulder slopes of a profile). What you are describing is the half angle (case centerline to shoulder on just one side). Cases get specified both ways.
