Best 20" ARs?

Any good factory M16/M16A1 or M16A2s out there? Looking for a BASIC and affordable yet reliable factory AR with a 20" barrel on it. I am not really an AR guy so don't know what is the best thing. Thanks!

There aren't many 20" factory rifles being made anymore. FN and Windham Weaponry come to mind. I own a 20" Windham upper and it's quite nice, but I don't think I'd pay $850 for their complete rifle.

Have you thought about slapping an upper and lower together? It'd be much cheaper and easier to find

Edit: Palmetto State Armory also has a complete 20" rifle for $879. Not worth it when they sell the upper for 319 and lower for 209

Here's an option for $320 with free shipping for an upper. Just add it to any complete lower you like.

+1 on the idea of just building what you want. I bet you could put one together for $600 or so if you shop around for the parts.

I have built a few dozen AR's and they are easy-peasy to assemble. The only special tool you need is a barrel wrench, the rest is just a hammer, a couple of punches and maybe a screwdriver or allen wrench set.

Thanks. Any ideas on a good quality lower and any 20" uppers? I just want normal military plastic handguards. I am going for the M16A2 look like the gun I shot in basic years ago. I want a KISS AR with iron sights and maybe a red dot but that is it, no rails, fixed stock, and a GI silent sling is all I am wanting. Just need one that is decently accurate and nice and reliable.

BCM makes complete 20" ar's with a removable carry handle. Great reputation too.

Anderson and PSA both make nice upper and lower receivers for as reasonable as you are likely to find. With PSA, you can order a complete lower for about the same as you can source the parts separately. Barrels are available from lots of different places although selection may be limited from time to time depending on the barrel profile you want.

A2 handguards are readily available as are buttstocks and grips. If you want a carry handle upper it will probably be easier to start with a flattop upper and get a removable handle rather than a real A2 style upper. I built a AR15-A2 HBAR a number of years ago using surplus and a Wilson match barrel. It has been a great shooter since I put it together back in 1989.

Bought an FN15 Rifle for $1,050 shipped. Dead accurate and reliable. Could've built a PSA for cheaper but I regret nothing. Built a PSA dissipator later

Stag also offers their Model 4 with a 20" hbar configuration, detachable handle. Some might consider the 1 in 9" twist rate to be slower than optimal, $859.99 at the moment.
I have owned a Model 6 for a couple years and have been very happy with it.

I do not want an HBAR. I would like a Gov't profile or even pencil barrel. I am not looking for a bench gun.

That's the advantage of building your own. You can make it anyway you want. The only limiting factor is your imagination......and wallet.

PSA has an excellent 20" SS barrel upper on sale. I have a similar upper with the 16" and it's accurate enough for most purposes.

BCM sells a "standard government" 20" barrel with an upper:

https://www.bravocompanyusa.com/BCM-...urg-gov-20.htm

I'm guessing they might also sell a complete rifle? But it may be cheaper to build your own like someone else said.

Hello Model12,

sorry, I removed any reference to manufacturers that I no longer respect. I apologize.

Green Mountain makes the 20" barrel. An A2 stock can be found for 50 dollars, with tube spring and buffer.

Aero Precision makes a fine lower receiver.

You can build your M16 look rifle for under 600 dollars today.

Good luck

Rich

Model12win....

No offense intended at all... but I strongly think you should move forward in your choice of an AR.

If my thoughts are not appreciated... I apologize.

Modern updates will make your AR a much more enjoyable AR.

IMHO..... I strongly suggest you consider a Savage MSR15 Recon... $765-800 price range.

I realize it is completely different than a standard 20" USGI model...

But, the Savage has a fantastic barrel... out of the box accuracy is far better then its asking price.
I have read numerous articles pointing out its dang good accuracy.

If I was in the market for a AR right now, I would buy a Savage Recon in a minute.

http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_3_118/7...on-review.html

Again, sorry for my counter thoughts... but I believe in "buy a good starting model, with a dang good barrel..." and the rest is easy to alter later if you want.

I have all sorts of AR's and have never had an issue with any of them.

I have altered everyone of them ... including my original Colt HBAR 20". ( It looked just like the photo in this thread )

Most of the add on's are very easy to do.

Any questions... please ask.
