serial number request
This is my first post - hope I'm doing this correctly. I have acquired a ".38 S. & W. SPECIAL CTG" serial number 520xxx (protocol suggests I don't post the whole number). The number 354 is stamped on the frame and visible when I open the cylinder. The number is duplicated on the base of the arm which holds the cylinder.
Also, I'm confused about what cartridge to buy. Appreciate any help. Thanks. |

Thanks, laytonj1. That's great. I made the mistake of assuming something more exotic and ordered a couple boxes of 38 S&W Fiocchi 145gr Lead Round Nose. As I'm sure you know they didn't chamber. Anyway, thanks again.
It's a 6-shot. I see that some folks post the whole serial number and some don't. Would the rest of the number help determine a birth date? j |

I have 3 S&W hand guns my late husband left me. I am curious as to dates and approx values, I intend to give them to my sons. One is a .38 special model 14-3 with a 6" barrel #3K46XXX. The next is a .44 magnum, model 29-3 also 6" barrel #AZ68XXX, and the last is a .9MM model 659 #TAA9XXX. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

.32 S&W 4th model
Hello all, I was just up at a family reunion and was able to come home with my great grampa's old .32 revolver. From everything I've been able to find on it, I'm fairly sure it's a Smith and Wesson double action 4th model. Since this model ran between the centuries (1883-1909) I'm wondering if I can pin it down on one side or the other since my understanding is that 1899 and earlier are "antiques" and 1900 and on are under modern firearm laws? Thanks for any help, the serial number is 1964XX.

EDIT: After doing some research I found that the serial number cross point for pre 1899 for your model gun is 209301 so it is a pre 1899. Quote:
Also, is it a modern swing out cylinder or an older break top (barrel and cylinder pivot down). Jim Last edited by laytonj1; August 25, 2011 at 08:15 PM. |

Thanks for the help with the 118281 jim. I can find no indication of a caliber on the side of the barrel. However, it does read "Smith & Wesson Springfield, Mass USA Pat'd Jan 24 65 July 11 65 Aug 24 69 reissue july 25 70 may 11 80 jan 3 82" on the top of the barrel. Also, it is an older break top 5 shot. hope that helps.

If it's has a concealed hammer and grip safety then it would be a .32 Safety Hammerless 2nd model. SN's ran from 91418 in 1902 to 170000 in 1909. Jim |
