Ruger GP100 357 question.

Shooters:

I have a Ruger GP100 357 with a six inch barrel. One of my favorite guns. I've had this gun a few years and shoot it about once a month. Shooting it today I noted that you cannot pull the trigger or cock the hammer if the cylinder is not in place.

Is this normal?

Life is good.

I don't have a GP 100. But such is the case with all my Smith & Wesson revolvers.

Yes that is normal operation ... the cylinder must be closed and locked in place before you can cock the gun and pull the trigger .

One can push the cylinder latch into the "closed" position with the left thumb and then operate the mechanism. Smiths and Rugers both work the same.
