Old Colt Cop Guns
This is Outpost75 reporting aboard. I am partial to pre-1980 Colt wheelguns and gather up retired cop guns when I find them. EDCs are a Colt Agent and an OP.

Around the turn of the Century (1899~1900) police revlvers were just about anything one would imagine. The .38 S&W top break revolvers were popular. My Dad told me of Nashville police carrying Colt Single Actions, presumable .45 Caliber. My grandfather, who was a deputy sheriff, carried a H&R .38 top break. And the .32-20 (.32 W.C.F.) was popular in a Colt revolver. For some reason Colt was the choice over the S&W, at least in my area of Tennessee. As far as I can determine, World War II chhanged the popularity to S&W. In the Memphis PD, the .38 Special Model 10 Heavy Barrel became the standard around 1955 or so.

I like them too, Outpost...the Colt below was owned by an Uncle who carried it in Buffalo, NY...;& while moon-lighting as a gate guard for Bethleham Steel. I shot the target in the pic, offhand-Weaver, from 7 yds, 5-shots (not six), with pre-WWll ammunition.
The 2nd pic is of a M67 Smith...a turn-in from the Louisville Police when they went over to autos....the hat's my own! That old piece has the smoothest DA trigger pull I've ever tried. The stocks are a pair of Altamonts which are a good match for .38 Special velocities/recoil. Best regards, Rod [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG]

The 3 inch OP did not come from the factory that way. Sandy Garrett of Nova Gun Works built it for me.
So far as I have been able to research Colt never made an OP in 3-inch. I wanted a compact and +P capable barn coat winter carry and that is "it." The 3-inch is a good compromise for compactness, adequate sight radius and ballistics. |

rodfac,
Never would I pose any of my revolvers with my hat, especially a pale gray one. A drop of oil or powder smoke smudge and you've ruined a $300 hat! Bob Wright

Bob...that's an everyday, chore hat here on the farm....our annual trips west with the RV allow us a cpl of hours in Saint Jo to peruse the Stetson outlet there....that particular "gun club" ran me $40!....It helps to have a 7-5/8" head as there's usually a broader selection. The roll was reworked for my tastes by the kind ladies there at Stetson....Rod

Teddy Roosevelt is said to have standardized the NYPD on a Colt .32 while police commissioner 1895-1896. People think it was in .32 New Police = .32 S&W Long, but the .32 SWL had only come out in 1896, so how long did it take for Colt to go from .32 Long Colt to .32 NP = .32 SWL?

The NYPD was still using the 32 colts at least into the late 1940s. I own a 1949 NYPD issued Police Positive in 32 New Police/ Smith and Wesson Long. A very handy little gun about the size of the Ruger SP101 but lighter.

.32s were issued to female officers, court bailiffs, school crossimg guards, meter maids and others in low-risk admin assignments into the early 1970s. I have a 3" .32 DS which came from Jovino's in 1970.
