Mini-G is what you want ...
In traditional 30.06 or modern 7.62/.308, although Shuff has also chambered the Mini-G in .35Whelen, a hunting favorite for big gamers. |

My FIRST deer rifle was a semi-auto and it was larger than a 308. My LAST deer rifle is a bolt and its smaller than a 308. Life is one long learning process, no rush. Enjoy the journey.
If you really cannot sleep at night, then buy another hit the fan rifle based on what ever concepts apply. I sure dont see an Garand as the best option for that and if you really live in fear, a compromise makes little sense. Any chance you could gamble the stuff does not hit the fan for a couple years and get a real rifle in the meantime? |

Personally, I'd be looking at SKS or mini14/30 since they cost less than half per round to feed compared to 308 and should serve op's needs pretty similarly from a piece of mind standpoint , both for a lot less out of pocket up front and long term

bbb7 asked for the "best NON tactical semi auto .308 caliber rifle". So far, all the options suggested are good rifles but are either military or non-semi auto.
I'd like to suggest an H&K SL-7. It is a semi-auto rifle which, while it looks somewhat military, is actually a sporting rifle purpose built by H&K in two models, the SL-6 in .223 and the SL-7 in .308. As a sporting rifle, they have an excellent trigger and are very accurate even though they are carbine length. They ain't cheap but they fit the OP's requirements and are certainly H&K quality all the way. |

SKS (low cost rifle and ammo)
M1A (higher cost rifle and ammo)

I almost suggested an SL-7, but they can be difficult to find and expensive. They certainly do have the craftsmanship, and quality one might be looking for if they could only have one rifle.
