Illinois gift for family in Missouri, what mess is going to happen?

Being one of the well versed members of my family when it comes to guns, I get asked a lot of questions along with request to fix things. One of the more agverating things is my grandfather's Marlin model 60. Everytime I come over I hear stories of jamming problems. More than once I've broke it down cleaned it and shot it will little issue. I'm not sure if its the ammo or rifle but I'm tired of it. So the soultion is try differnt ammo or another rifle, however here is the problem. My grandparents live in MO and I live in IL and I would like to make it a gift. However the laws in IL are so messed up I don't know if I would have an issue gifting a rifle to him. What do I need to do to make this legal? Thank you.

Buy the rifle and next time you head to MO to visit, drop by a local FFL with your grandparent and transfer the gun in person. The other option is to go to a gun store while in MO and buy the gun with your grandparent there so he can fill out the paperwork. I do not think you could buy the rifle in MO and transfer it to your grandfather without going through an FFL, but i could be wrong on that.

This is the easiest legal way. Go to the store in Missouri with your grandfather, find what you want to give him, he fills out 4473 with his name, address, etc, you pay the cashier, and you both leave.

You're correct. Because you're an IL resident and he's a MO resident, there's no legal way to give him a firearm without involving a FFL and 4473. On top of that, a MO dealer may not sell to an IL resident because of the IL FOID requirements.

I wonder, would it be illegal to simply loan your aging relative a better-functioning firearm for specified legal purposes and for an extended period of time. You will likely outlive your Grandfather; if you were to buy him a rifle in his later years, i would not be surprised to see his estate return the rifle to you upon his passing; i doubt your Grandfather would really care if the rifle was in his name on some FFL's book.

Assuming this would be legal (loaning for specified legal purposes to a non-prohibited person residing in another state), it would seem simpler in the longer run. (not an attorney here, let one say this is legal or not)

Would it be illegal to take it with you and just leave it there forever... That way you have it there when ever you visit...

My friend had to apply for a Firearm Owners ID before he could legally even touch a gun in Illinois.

This is copied from the above website:
"The FOID card is required for any resident of Illinois to possess or purchase firearms."

If he doesn't have a FOID card and you just give him a gun,,,
I believe you have just set him up for a felony conviction in Illinois.

One reason I will avoid that state like the plague,,,
I won't even drive through a corner of it.
