Training barrel?
JohnSka posted a link to an article at Cornered cat that mentioned a concept of dry firing with an inert training barrel.

Does anyone make a reasonably affordable substitute that will work in Springfield XD series? I'm not find anything, but I REALLY like the concept of dry firing with an inert barrel. |

Some alternatives. Not exactly the same thing, but the same general idea. The block prevents a round from being chambered, is readily visible and can not be removed without disassembling the firearm.
