The number on the butt is R710XX. Its a 38 Spl chiefs in ss. The revolver is a five shot and looks in excellent condition. My friend is asking $300 and wonder if that is reasonable thanks
~1971/72. Unless it's beat up, whoever gets it for $300 is getting a bargain.

I'm looking at purchasing a model 10-8 serial # 5D-49xxx. Hoping to find the dob. Also, does $375 sound like a fair price for this revolver?

1979. Depends on condition, no to very little wear I would say it's sounds fair.

Assuming you took the serial number from the bottom of the grip butt, SN 489X would make it a .44 Hand Ejector 1st Model (Triple Lock).
Serial numbers ran from 1 in 1907 to 15375 in 1915.
Caliber options in .44 were 44 S&W Special, 44 S&W Russian and 44-40 Winchester.
These are highly collectable and valuable guns.
A picture would be great.

lawdog2592: What you have there should be a .44 Double Action first model, caliber should be .44 S&W Russian, these guns were manufactured from 1881 to 1913 in a serial number range from 1 to 53590.

If the barrel is stamped .44 Winchester Ctg. then it is a .44 Double Action Frontier in .44-40, manufactured 1886-1913, in a serial number range 1 - 15340.

rad,

I was unable to find any sort of stamp or other markings on the barrel other than what is on the top rail which includes s&w Springfield Mass U.S.A and some Pat'd dates. So I guess that would make it a .44 Russian.

Radagast is correct.
I assumed a hand ejector, not breaktop. Sorry for the mistake. Pictures make all the difference.

Now I am curious to find out more about this gun. Where would be the best place to find a rough value of the gun. I took it to a gun store out of curiosity and he was very excited when i pulled it out thinking I was going to sell it so of course when I asked a value he said "man I'm not even sure what kind of gun that is. I mean i may give you $100 for it but that would even be pushing it" I am not going to sell it but would love to know what it truly might be worth. Thanks again for the information.

The problem with a gun like yours is it's appeal is limited to collectors only and they generally prefer them in higher grade condition. Things like if the finish is original, how much finish is left and does everything function well all have a bearing on value. That and finding someone looking for that type gun. That said, the SCSW list values ranging from $285 in poor condition to $6500 as new. It would need to be evaluated by someone knowledgeable with those type guns and their current values.

Just bought a used 357 at a gun show this weekend. Taken about a 15 year break on gun ownership.

Serial # SWT00**

Says performance center on barrel. Came with nothing but a black plastic gun case. I think it has a lock on it but there is no key. Do I need a key if I'm never going to lock it??

Did you get the number from the bottom of the grip butt? There should be a "K" prefix.

Not in the book. You'll have to call S&W customer service to get the DOB on it. It'd free over the phone.

Could you help me out here? S&W 38 special, serial number 487125, nickel, has the early 1900s patent numbers on top of the barrel

paid 200, told it was worthless, was offered 300, and today was offered 1200

we know nothing
was gonna upload pics but poor internet connection prohibits it in a timely manner

Gusgus30125: The serial number range 712954 to 826977 was used between 1971 & 1970, a H serial prefix was added in 1969, if there is a diamond of uncheckered wood around the grip screws then it is from 1968 or earlier, If it has a flat cylinder latch then it is from 1966 or earlier. Sorry I can't give you more info, laytonj1 may have more reference than I.

Oklahoma 1987: Your gun falls in the serial number range from 1915-1942, being 241704-700000, which is the .38 Military & Police Model of 1905 4th Change. As far as I know there are no patent dates on this versions barrel however. I am not all knowing and am willing to be corrected. The standard catalog of S&W notes that guns marked Texas State Prison were shipped 1927-1930 in the 500,000 to 630,000 serial range, so your gun predates that.
Some pictures may help to ascertain it's identity.

I don't have the gun in front of me, but I would presume it would be K25422X to be consistent with the other K-22's.
