Is this Rust in my Barrel??
Just bought a brand new Mossberg 590A1 shotgun. I haven't fired it yet, and I'm new to gun ownership. I found some rusty coloration in the barrel and was just wondering is this rust or is it something else? Thanks for any help.

Easiest way to tell would be to clean the barrel. It could be grease or oil from the factory, but even if it is light rust, it will come clean with a brush and solvent.
Just noticed, Welcome to the forum. |

Welcome to TFL and Congrats on your new shotgun.
Either rust or maybe discoloration from wading when it was shot at the factory. Either way, as hoghunting said, clean her up and oil her down, she'll be ok. |

Could be rust stain, could be factory preservative, hard to say. Either way, a good cleaning and light lube won't hurt.

If it is factory rust and it comes off, will my barrel be more likely to have rust in the future now that there has been some?

There seems to be a deposit of that same red stuff that would indicate that the stains in question are a foreign substance, not rust.
As with all new shotguns, your gun needs a complete cleaning before you fire it. Until you've cleaned it, don't get too excited about what you see. |
