Did some casting today for 44mag

Both are lee molds, they have worked great. 208g round flats, 248g SWC with gas checks. Sized to .430

been playing with the powder coating. using powder by the pound glass clear and Eastwoods ford light blue.

first couple batches were coated with glass clear, and had some light blue sprinkled on top. I found this hard to do and got extra powder all over the tray. left flashing on the bullet bases a bit that I had to trim off.

Did a few where I mixed the blue and clear in the tub, gave a cool kind of translucent blue. I will be mixing it more in the future.

Nicely filled out! Any idea what the alloy proportions are?

They are melted down Brazos bullets. I received an order that had been sized wrong and am re-using them (Brazos was awesome and replaced them for free), so I am not sure on the alloy.

They were cast a bit hot. I'm hoping to build a PID controller this summer. my lee pot is running 850-875 on low per my rcbs thermometer..... smh. So I'm not sure if the good fill out was due to the alloy or the heat.

but they have all come in heavy. the 200s weigh in at 208, and the 240s weigh in at 243 (248 with gas checks)

I think you did a fine job and your heat is helping the fill out. Keep it up.

I've not tried coating my bullets. It looks interesting but I have a Star Lube Sizer and it works perfectly. I don't mind a little smoke from my rounds and I don't cast as much as I use to.

I have bought coated bullets and love the way they keep my gun clean. I can run 1000 bullets and still see no lead in the barrel.

Brazos did good by you. I tried Berry Bullets and had the same thing happen. They ignored the problem so I will never buy one of their bullets again.

Thanks, i try hard to get good fill out, love the crisp clean lines.

I could not justify, and dont have a place to put a lube/sizer. I tried alox and did not like the way it made the bullets look. Tried pan lubing with some home brew lube made from frog lube paste and bees wax. I just did not like that the lube could potentially melt and mess up my powder. So i decided to try powder coating. Love the clears as they still look like lead bullets, but its fun to play with colors.

Got the 44mag as a hunting rifle my son could use. Bullets were kinda hard to come by and a bit expensive so i grabbed a couple lee molds and got off to the races.
