Love my Marlin 39A, but you can get a Marlin that is just as accurate and reliable for between $100-200 USD. Regardless, you can't go wrong with a Marlin.

I am a huge fan of the CZ 452s.
The Marlins and Savages are accurate shooters as well.

remington 597, inexpensive, and a blast (teehee) to shoot, had a 10/22, remington better out of the box

There is no best-for-the-money .22 rifle. Only "most-appropriate-for-your money-and-use" .22 rifle. For me, it is a Henry .22 lever, for the next guy, it may be a Kimber, a Dakota, a Nylon or a Marlin.

Personally I would go with a Marlin model 39 of some configuration, and the older the better in my opinion. But in my opinion you could pretty much pick any manufacturers sample as long as they were made 50-100 years ago. Old Mossberg's bolt or semi are truely amazing things of beauty and function.

CZ 452 Scout. They used to be $200 but now street for $225 around here.

The Savage Cub is a great one too. A lot of gun for nearly nothing!

I have a couple of Remington 597's and they are straight shooters. My first one was a older unit I found used for $75. I had to do a little work to it to get it perfect. My second one was a used one for $100 but a newer model. It was a straight shooter right out the box.

i bought the plinkster at wal-mart for 92 dollars plus tax two years ago.. they had one there tonight for 106 dollars. i would still buy it at that price. i also have a henry and a savage mkII. they are all great shooters but i think the mossberg is the best deal. i like reliable semi auto's not a huge bolt action fan. i would choose semi auto over bolt action in the plinkster model just becouse i know they are reliable. i think the bolt action mossberg is called the 802 not 702..

With all due respect here to anyone who has one, my buddy has a 597 and absolutely hates it!!! It jams constantly with any ammo, doesn't shoot accurately, and is just a real piece of junk. His uncle gave it to him because he despised it, and my buddy says he wishes now he'd never have even taken it from him.
Just one example of that gun, but nontheless.......

I've found the CZ line has a lot to offer in the most "bang" for the money area.

I will throw down for the 981T and also say the tube fed is great for the 22lr bolt gun.

Listed in my area at $150

Marlin 795. Light weight, more accurate (generally) than a 10/22, and *generally* more reliable. Not as accesorizable as 10/22s.

The reason i like it better than the 60's is because it is not a tubefed magazine. It comes with detatchable 10 round mags. Otherwise i wouldnt really see a difference.

Ive got a plinkster and found it to be rather inaccurate. but it could be the bullets i use. they are the remington golden bullet that the sell in boxes of 550 and ive heard they are not very good.

Best for the money? The ones on the used rifle rack. Most brands work well, and there are some real gems that aren't made anymore as well as lightly used current models that someone just got tired of or saw something they wanted more. They're mostly bolt action and semi-auto, but I see pumps and lever guns as well. I've got a dozen 22 rifles. I purchased three of them new.

Marlin Model 60. My dad bought me one when I was twelve. Didn't clean it once until I joined the Army (was afraid to take it apart) and it still works fine (I'm 34 now). My daughter has as much fun with it today as I did 20+ years ago.

Another vote here for the CZ 452. They are really nice rifles for the money, although I had trouble finding any under $370 new.

Mossberg t-144

Best .22 I ever owned, it and the next best Mossberg 372 were stolen by a drug addict and I never saw again.

I have a Springfield Mod. 15 for the grandkids, cut down and scoped...great rifle.

Plus the Marlin 60 and the Ruger 10-22 both great rifles. I use the 60 for pest control around the lake house. It is a 70 Medallion model and had ten pounds of burnt powder in it when I bought it not working. LOL

Last edited by Dougw47; January 1, 2010 at 07:44 PM. Reason: clarification of Mod. 60

So far, my favorite rimfire has to be the Savage Cub. It's probably my favorite firearm....period.

It's the one that gets all the critter killing jobs around the barns and pasture. It was given to one of my kids. But I love to shoot it. It's kinda silly when all the super guns in the safe become safe queens once that silly little savage Cub arrived. It's kinda embarrassing though. A little single shot .22 is now my favorite. Oh well.
