CCI Magnum Small Pistol Primer Error
I bought 1000 of these by mistake. Can these be used in non magnum recipes?

Yes. You will get a slight increase in velocity--back your powder down 5%
or so and work back up. In USPSA minor 9mm, I see no more than 10 fps more with magnums. If you are running a revolver or striker fired gun with a competition trigger job, you might see more "light strikes" with the harder magnum primers. If you are loading VERY light plinking ammo, you might see some gas leakage around the primer, again because of the harder material in the magnum primers. At one time small pistol magnum (Winchester) was the only primer I used for 9mm and 40 S&W in both minor and major power factor loads. Over 50,000 combined with no problems. |

I've found, through personal experience, that the velocity may or may not increase. It is very much dependent on the powder and primer. I recently shot some identical loads, except for regular and magnum primers, side by side over my chronograph. A 5 shot string averaged just 2 FPS faster in the magnum primer rounds. I've seen larger variations in 5 shot string velocities, shooting the exact same primers in all rounds, just between different trips to the range....won't even consider the change due to temperature, etc.
I agree....drop back 5% and work back up. You may or may not end up at the same powder charge as previously used with standard primers. The mag primers can certainly be used. |

With the ongoing powder shortage I discovered that I could use the 550 primers to drop my charge of AA # 7 by around 10% and still have good plinking loads that would run the gun (a .40). I've shot a ton of them with no issues. I also load clays and universal clays and titegroup in my .40s but will not attempt to use the magnum primers with those faster powders. Safe shooting.

Sometimes it's easy to miss that red "Magnum" against the navy blue background; for some reason, it blends in. I've done the same thing.

With general purpose shooting rounds (not exceptionally hot rounds), I consider magnum and standard primers to be virtually interchangeable. I've never set up my chronograph and ran tests, but I have shot the same recipe - except the primers - with a revolver, in an "every-other-charge-hole" configuration - and could feel no difference shooting back n forth between the two.

I ran low on 500's and was using 550's for a bunch of recipies - straight across - no powder reduction. And it was a non-event. Again: not with high-end full-power recipes. Just talking the general purpose shooter stuff. (Most of my high-power stuff uses magnum primers anyway. . . but that's for another thread.)

New Thread ??
We should start a new thread:
"Who has bought CCI 550's by mistake; and how many?"

I use the Federal magnum pistol primers in the 40S&W.
I do take my sidearm in the woods with me while hunting, and was told for cold weather use it is good to have the magnum primers. Using Blue Dot and 150gr. hollowpoints. Hi-Point seems to like the combination. |

I haven't seen CCI 550 primers in my locale in years.
The regular ones are back in circulation. Hopefully this means the 550s are coming back soon.
