Let's talk weight and ARs

What would you recommend as a feather weight complete AR? Any trim uppers you like? I'd like to be able to have back up iron (or plastic) sights with an ACOG as the primary.

Christensen arms ca-15 recon. Lightweight, accurate, reliable, and it just looks awesome.Only 1 problem though it is about 3 k

Doublestar makes an ultralight that weighs a measly 5.5lbs before you add sights so look for it to be approximately 6lbs with your ACOG on there. MSRP is $1249.99 so I'd expect to pay somewhere in the upper $900 to low $1000 range at a gun store.

You aren't very likely to find a lighter gun for the money than that.

Depends on how much ounce-counting you plan to do. A CAV-15 lower (now made and sold by GWACS Armory) will cut a bit of weight off the lower/stock, and with a lightweight profile barrel cut down a fair amount on the total rifle weight. Going to a 14.5" barrel from a 16" and having a flash hider pinned on will also chop off a few more ounces.

You might even find a polymer upper receiver for even less weight, but t'were me, I'd probably stick with forged and eat the weight there.

The rifle on the bottom has a Cav Arms Mk2 lower, Clark carbon handguard, Cardinal Armory ultralight barrel, and with a fully loaded 10 round mag of 6.8spc, it's 6 lbs 2oz.

I built a lightweight AR for my wife ("it's too heavy.... blah, blah, blah....") using PSA's pencil premium mid length upper. Well, I love it. I frequently steal it and take it to the range instead of some of my other ARs.

It depends on what I'm doing.

If I'm humping the brush as an infantryman, I want light weight, about the weight of the Colt SP1, or M16a1 that I carried in Vietnam.

If I'm shooting High Power, I want a bit more weight. Heavier barrel and weighted rifle to balance it.

What do you mean by feather weight? Under 6 pounds?

I have Daniel Defense and BCM 16" LW KISS midlengths that come in around 6.3 pounds with MBUS rear sights. The pencil barrel is a good way to go for light weight and it doesn't cost more than M4 or government profiles.

I would like something like this:

Upper: PSA
The pencil upper is a few oz lighter, but is said to open up the groups a bit under heavy fire!

Complete Lower: PSA

BCG: PSA

Light and should cost ~$700, if ever all in stock!

The weight of the upper will be determined by the barrel used(unless you're using a carbon fiber upper rcvr).

Another vote for CAV arms lower. My Cav Arms MKII lower mated to a BCM 14.5 upper with MOE handguard, MI fixed rear sight and loaded 20 round mag weighs 6.4 lbs.

The very best weight savings devise is a $200 tax stamp.

The nice thing about the SBR stamp is it registers the lower so you can have multiple uppers under 16".
