First time firing slugs fom my 870PM yesterday. Bought a couple boxes of the Fed classic 1 oz. and headed to the range to sight in at 50 yards or so.

Jeezus Pleezus talk about recoil.

I thought the 00 S&B was bad.

I did have on a PAST recoil thing that I recently got and it helped.... I guess

Needless to say, I had a fun time at PT this morning...

Now picture touching off a Brenneke 3" magnum with a 1 3/8 oz. slug at about 2400FPS. I can't even imagine what that would do to my 59 year old neck bones. Can you say whiplash?

I'll go out to the range and shoot at a 25 yard target which is the designated shotgun target for this particular range. I'll go and shoot around 100-150 rounds at a time, with half being slugs and half 00 buck, in less than 30 minutes. It makes me a little red on the edge of my chest but nothing that hurts. My arms get tired way before it hurts too bad.

DML, you refer to a Brenneke 1 3/8 oz at 2400 fps.
That would probably just rip my shoulder right off...
but I was looking at the Brenneke web site, and it looks
like their hottest slug is the 3" magnum, 1 3/8 oz,
at 1476 fps. That still sounds like something
which is devastating at both ends, of course. The
website says that it will leave a 12gauge entrance
and exit wound on any game. Does anyone know where
I could buy some of these? I would love to try them
out to see what maximum recoil on a shotgun feels
like and also to see how my gun performs with
these slugs at longer ranges.

I must have "fat fingered" the 2 instead of the 1. I meant about 1400FPS which is more then fast enough for a 1 3/8 oz. projectile.

I did a few calculations of what the recoil energy might be with various loads.

1 3/8 oz. slug at 1475 fps in a 7 pound shotgun = 46 f/p.

1 3/8 oz slug at 2400 fps in a 7 pound shotgun = 114 f/p.
(OUCH! not likely)

.458 Win. Magnum 500 gr. bullet at 2100 fps in a 12 pound rifle = 53 f/p.

A typical .308 Win 150 gr load in a 9 pound rifle = 14 f/p

Erick,

I hear you about form. The recoil did not hurt as I properly place the stock in the right area. I have been recovering from a rotator cuff injury for about a year (11 mos.). After any activity my shoulder becomes a little achy and stiff. PT once a week helps as do all the other crap I have to do to keep it working.

I was just not expecting such a blast that's all.

FWIW- the first time I shot an SG, I kept the butt way out on my bicep. The next day my arm was black and blue. I learned a bit that day.

Did exactly the same thing myself shooting some quick reaction targets with slugs. The stock worked it's way down my bicep and the bruise extended from shoulder to elbow.

Putting your weight forward, holding the gun firmly but not tightly and rolling with the recoil makes shooting the big stuff less unpleasant.

Self correcting implement? Thanks, Erick, a great way to describe proper technique.

Any slug from a 7 lb shotgun will get your attention. That's one of the reasons my slug shooters run much heavier.

Coop, try the KO Brennekes, 1 oz slug at reasonable velocities. You also might want to add a Side Saddle and/or a mag extension for the weight.

The big thing tho, is proper technique. I highly recommend checking the archives, one of the most common threads is dealing with kick.

I love slugs, I really do.

Whenever these subjects come up all I can say is that I love slugs. Love shooting them at 100 yard paper targets and seeing how close I can get since I only have a bead front sight instead of those goofy ghostrings or rifle sights which I just can't stand on a shotgun.

Anything out to about 100 yards in a defensive situation would be in a whole lot of serious hurt if I should have slugs in the chamber.

About 1/2 of the rounds that have been fired through my 870 Police Magnum have been slugs.

Only thing that I can't stand about shooting slugs is trying to clean the plastic fouling that is along the bore for a span of about 3 inches ahead of the chamber. Made me a firm believer in the Tornado type brushes.

I've gotta get my hands on some of those Breneke 1 3/8 inch slugs. I've fired off a couple of 2oz Turkey loads and those were pretty brutal.

I love shooting slugs outta my REM 870 Marine Mag! I like winchester's "super X", heck, the 2 3/4 inch ones are one ounce of lead going 1600fps! Can't remember off hand what the 3 inchers are going at but, WOW what a wallop! yep... they'll spank you alright...

I don't think there is a 1 3/4 oz. 12 ga. slug, but if there was, the estimated recoil in a 7 pound gun would be about 76 foot pounds. OUCH!

I recently got some of the 3" Magnum Brenneke slugs from Cabelas. They aren't listed in the catalog, but they have them in the retail stores. You can order them by speaking to a product specialist, who will give you the order numbers. They cost about a dollar each.

They are impressive to shoot on both ends of the gun, but I couldn't get accuracy that satisfied me. I ended up using a rifled choke tube and sabot slugs instead.

welp i get ta say a few werds now,at 5'11.5" and 165 lbs i aint got much meat on my shoulder pad area at all.a hefty shooters pad with velcro helps take the whallop away for us bony types.i shoot an 870 express mag in black matte topped with a 3x9 scope and standard rem pad soon to be a gooey one or a decellerator.if ya aint got a shoulder pad just fold up a towel.it works just as well.100 yards mag 3" punkin ball 3-5" on paper is fine for me.brennekes : gotta lovem man.
i still have a secret stash of old bri sabots i hot loaded which group tighter for some reason than the punkin ball out of my 26" skeet vented tube with a modified choke.
