Hey I recently traded for a nickel plated S & W .357 Model 19-3 the serial number is 2K14***. I was wondering what year this gun was produced.

The grips are worn which is understandable because it was supposedly the duty gun of a buddy's dad or granddad. Where could I find replacement or have them reconditioned?

Serial numbers ran from 536685 in 1948 to 826977 in 1976. SN 712954 was 1961 so maybe late 1950's to 1960 for yours.

ACV7XXX is the serial # the 686 I bought on Saturday. A date would be appreciated to put with this.

Take the serial number from the location in the pic and include any letter prefixes such as "J". If that is where you got from then it would date to 1952 which is 5 years before S&W began stamping model numbers on the gun.
+P is not recommended for the aluminum frame guns. It won't blow it up but it will accelerate wear.

It's a K-38 Combat Masterpiece which became the model 15 when S&W began assigning model numbers in 1957.

Need more info. Is it a modern swing out cylinder or one where the barrel/cylinder tips down to load/unload. Is the caliber on the side of the barrel 32 S&W or 32 S&W long?

Its the old style where the barrel and cylinder tip forward. I believe it's 32 s&w .To be honest with you it doesn't say at all what caliber it is? All it has on top of the barrel is a bunch of patent dates?

That leaves two possibilities. If it has an exposed hammer then it's a 32 Double Action 4th Model. Serial numbers ran from 43406 in 1883 to 282999 in 1909.

If it has a concealed hammer (with grip safety) then it's a 32 Safety Hammerless 2nd Model. Serial numbers ran from 91418 in 1902 to 170000 in 1909.

Either way, value is not high. Runs about $400 to $500 in excellent condition.

Can you tell me more about the markings on the top of the barrel? They read as follows.Smith & wesson Springfield, Mass. USA patd Jan 24, 65 July 11, 65 Aug 24, 69. Reissue July 25, 71 May 11, 80 Jan 3, 82. Yes it does have a hammer and is double action.

They're patent dates for the various patented features used of that model.

Hello everyone. I just joined this site. My grandfather left me a gun and I don't know how to tell much about them. Looked for a model # but there isn't one on this gun anywhere. On the barrel of the gun it has "38 S.&W. SPECIAL CTG.". Inside the cylinder on the frame it has "39979", "D", the number "8", and the number "9". On the butt of the gun it has "C 420xxx". Can anyone help me date this one? Will it shoot +P? What would the value of this gun be in excellent condition? Thanks in advance for the help.

It's not stainless. It was made a few decades before S&W had stainless. It has been refinished and it's likely nickel.
If it's not a 38 then that leaves 32. Assuming that is what it is then it would be a 32 Hand Ejector 3rd Model. Serial numbers ran from 263001 in 1917 to 536684 in 1942. Heat treating started at serial number 321000 in 1920 so yours predates that.

38 Military & Police. Serial numbers ran from C402924 in 1957 to C429740 in 1959. +P is safe to use. Value around $400 range.
