Side of the barrel is stamped 38 s&w special otg EDIT I'm assuming +p is a no no out of a non +p pistol such as this? |

The 1974 date that the SN corresponds to is consistent with the time that the -1 variation of the M64 was in production, so it appears that SCSW just fails to mention that the "D" SN prefix was also used for M64s.
Interestingly, the book also notes that some of the 64-1s were chambered for .357 Magnum as a special production run for the Oklahoma Highway Patrol and that variation was the prototype for the Model 65 (even though in the discussion of the M65, they say it was introduced earlier than the .357 Model 64 - go figure). I can't find an answer to your question about whether a 64-1 is OK with +p, but Jim or someone else will likely be along to help with that. |

Thank you
laytonj1,
Thank you for taking the time to narrow down the time frame of my Hand Ejector. I found the grips and pre 1920 is close enough for us old guys...Take care and God bless. ...cordell |

I have a 642-1 that I bought used. The serial number is CDP-4XXX. If anyone could tell me the approximate date of manufacture I'd really appreciate it. I know it's not very old, but I just would like to know when the gun was made approximately.

Can someone please date my gun
I've recently inherited a smith and wesson model 10 revolver with a case that is dated 1899, which turns out to be the first year the revolver was produced. the serial number is only 5 digits and they are 451XX. I left the last 2 numbers off for privacy (I'm not sure if privacy should be a concern or not). If someone can give me the DOB based off of this info, it would be greatly appreciated!

However, it would not be stamped as a model 10. Also, are you saying you have the original box? Quote:

S&W model and year??
I just recieved an old revolver from my grandfather along with an old single shot 20ga. I am having a little trouble figuring out what model it is and I would also like to know what year it is.
Its a S&W .38 special, six-shot with 5 inch barrel. It has fluted cylinder, fixed sights, and checkered walnut grips. I believe its a M&P. Serial number is 4-digits starting with 40xx. Mine is identical to this one (see attached photo) except mine has 5" barrel, this appears to be 6". Mine also has a smaller/shorter hammer. I would really appreciate it if someone could let me know what model it is, what year it is, and if possible what it may be worth. I would never sell it, but I'm curious. Thank you Last edited by Glenn E. Meyer; November 30, 2013 at 11:47 AM. |
