Velocity champ 300 Savage

Pick up a box of Hornady Superformance 300 Savage 150 gr SST. They advertise 2740 fps and I clocked them at 2714 fps from my Savage 99EG.
Anybody who worships velocity this is the load for them. I guess having a full blown lab and access to special blends of powders makes this possible.
When I get a chance I will shoot some for accuracy.

They got me beat by 54 fps (1941 99F).

I also had some factory Remington 150 gr Core Loke and they clocked 2625 fps.
I have been working with Varget and 150 gr Hornady bullets and having mixed results. However I am having to use cases made from 308 Winchester. So far I am getting hard extraction at 40 gr. of Varget with about 2500 fps.
I really need to shoot up some of my factory ammo and try loading with real 300 Savage cases.

By the way, those Hornady loads give flattened primers. If they had been my reloads I would back off about 1 grain. There is no free lunch, Hornady is getting this velocity by increasing the pressure.

Factory ammo that exhibits flattened primers? That's not good. Any others seeing this with the Superformance ammo? That would certainly give me pause. I tend to wonder if it is an individual rifle thing.

I have seen it often.

"Flattened" primers run from something barely noticeable all the way to having the firing pin strike "ironed flat" so, first define the degree of flattening.

Second, flattened primers (mild version) can be the load, it can be the gun, it can be the primer cup metal, and can happen at safe pressures.

Always remember that there is a significant amount of "room" between the operating pressure spec and the dangerous pressure limit.

Velocity champ 300 Savage

Varget has been my preferred 300 sav powder. Varget prices as of late have caused me to switch powders. Last 300 sav batch I reloaded, I used H335 powder.

Not sure how relevant this would be in 300 Savage, but in my limited use for .223 I’ve found H4895 performs very comparably to Varget. Might be a more affordable alternative. It’s been a while since I’ve priced powders, I’m pretty much stocked for the rest of my life.

IMR 3031, N140, and RL-15 have Hornady data in the 2700 fps range, and IMR 4064 will get you to 2800 fps. If I want speed out of the .300 Savage I use RL-7 and 125 gr NBT/AB bullets for deer, and the 130 gr TTSX for elk. With my daughter's M700 Classic I get almost 3100 fps with the Nosler bullets and mid 2900 fps with the Barnes.
