Of course you can taper crimp a cannelured bullet. With full power loads in .44 mag, I wouldn't recommend it either, but with a plinking type load with faster powders and a slim to none chance of bullet pull, I see no real issues, unless the ammo will be used in a tube fed .44 carbine.
