Noob wanting to start reloading

Alright wanting to try my hand at reloading 45ACP. I have a few things that I've found at yard sales and such plus I've lurked on here for info. Heres what I got so far.
Lyman Spartan press
RCBS Powder measure, scale, case trimmer, deburring tool and primer feeder
I've got some brass.....gonna have to buy some bullets, primers and powder.

My questions are: Am I only lacking a set of dies and a good reloading book?
What dies and book do you recomend with this press?
I've tried searching but am unsure of if dies have to match press and the total package to get started. (If that makes sence) Just wanting to try my hand before I jump in whole hog. Thanks for any help

G'day and welcome to TFL. Get a reloading manual and read it. Read the sticky at the top of this section. Ask lots of Questions. Enjoy.

Robby:

Read the first half of Richard Lee's Modern Reloading. Great info and hopefully give you better insight to what you are trying to accomplish.

Read it before assembling your first round.

WELCOME TO THE FORUM!!!

Modern Reloading and The ABC's of Reloading are excellent books on how to reload. Lymans 49th is probably the most comprehensive manual and has lots of recipes for lead bullets. One manual is never enough.

Good Shooting!!!

You're close!

Sounds like you are well on your way.

I would suggest RCBS Dies cause in essence you are purchasing a Life Time Warranty on 100% of the parts - yes, pins too.
  • Yes, the threads on that press accepts standard dies. (I have that press)
  • Don't forget the Shell Holder !
  • As for the brass Trimmer, I've never used one on pistol cases but it will be of use on rifles.
  • Your Brass, if you have any that says AMERC or A-merc, toss them.
  • although not too common you will eventually find 45 acp brass with SMALL primer pockets - I discard those, they reap havic on the progressives
  • You need a Dial Caliper if not already have one
  • ....... Welcome & Good Luck !

I just started reloading myself on a RCBS press (25 30-06 rifle cartridges so far). If you are going to be priming your cartridges off the press with a hand primer, make sure you get a second shell holder. You can switch the holder back and forth but it gets old very fast. You'll also need a loading block, calipers, and a way to clean the dirty shell casings.

The only other thing you may want, but don't necessarily need, is a hand primer. Lots faster than priming on the press.

John Laird, I have the universal hand prime. It has automatic adjusting jaws that make hand priming a snap. Look into it. You might be able to return the one that takes shellholders.

Look here

I love mine!!!

Read a manual first

I borrowed a Hornady Manual and read it before I bought anything.

Then got a Lee Anniv. Kit. Loading 40 & 44mag no regrets at all.

RCBS Universal Hand Primer

The RCBS Universal Hand Primer will reprime from the 25 to the 45 with expandible jaws. Great invention.
