M1 garand jamming
I have a cmp rebuild m1 garand by Springfield and its jamming on the third shot and sometimes after. The jamming specifically is its trying to eject the clip around the 3rd shot and I have been reading much about it and I am loading the clips so that the top round is on the left side I have cleaned and lubed it and everything seems to be in working order and I am shooting military ammo out of it. I can't think of what else could be wrong with it. Please help

Doesn't matter which side the bullet is in the clip. The follower doesn't care
Premature clip ejection can be the fault of the clip latch or clip latch spring. When pbratton said "go check out the CMP website, they have a wealth of knowledge available. ".... ...what he meant was "go the the CMP Forums and ask them" |

"...loading the clips so that the top round is..." Hi. That was the temporary fix for the '7th Round Stoppage' issue. The 7th round stoppage issue was fixed before the rifle got into full production. Had to do with a wee piece of the receiver getting removed, unintentionally, in the factory. Doesn't apply to your issue.
You need to look at the follower rod. It's likely bent. Usually happens on the 7th round though. This part. Gunparts is sold out though. http://www.gunpartscorp.com/catalog/...30&catid=11884 $13.46 for a new one from Fulton. Bit pricey but it's brand new. Part Number: FA-G-032 Wouldn't hurt or cost a lot to change the clip latch and its spring too. http://www.fulton-armory.com/M1-Garand-Parts.aspx The nice people at the CMP will fix it for you. Or just change the follower rod. Go here for free .pdf manuals. Note the need for the provided UN & PW. Download TM-9-1275 and FM-23-5. http://www.biggerhammer.net/manuals/ Buy a copy of Hatcher's Book of the Garand and Hatcher's Notebook too. About $30 each from Amazon or your local gun shop. Worth every cent. |

Reading Kuhnhausen suggests the likely cause is a weak or broken clip latch spring. Brownell's has the spring.
The Kuhnhausen books could be better indexed, finding what you need to know can be a chore, and as shop manuals for gunsmiths the books can overwhelm the casual owner and shooter, but I am glad I bought mine. |

See here:
http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_6_6/301..._shots___.html It's a not uncommon problem. w/ some relatively simple fixes. |

Nanook of the North:
Most jams of the M1 are improper lubrication. The Garand fuctions best with a grease the consistency of GI lubriplate. Lubricate any surfice that shows metal to metal rubbing. Make sure to lube the operating rod's bolt recess and the inside rails that the bolt rides in. Wipe thin layer on the bottom of the barrel's chamber where the operating rod slides over it. A thin coat on the top of the bolt where is chambers helps too. Semper Fi. Gunnery sergeant Clifford L. Hughes USMC Retired |
