Dan, you can look at stats post DOW site

http://cpw.state.co.us/thingstodo/Pages/Statistics.aspx

I never hunted 48. I've hunted units next to it 45,(44 doesn't border 48),444 Holy Cross . I was on early Sept buck that was limited to Holy Cross Wilderness and drop camp set up from local outfitter. I should mention the have some nice B&C bucks in there if you get lucky.

I drew a cow elk muzzle loader tag in 2010 for the area west of Leadville down to south of Twin Lakes(sorry, can't remember what unit) and hunted in early Sept. I worked at Buena Vista and scouted all summer. It was hot and dry resulting in poor hunting conditions. My partner had a bum hip and couldn't make real long treks so we didn't get more than 3 miles from our vehicle. We discovered the elk were traveling in 4-5 day loops and we couldn't catch up to their next loop.
Bottom line-no elk seen.
