TRY 10.0 TO 12.0 GR. OF Blue Dot with that 45 gr bullet. Start at 10.0 and work up 0.5 gr at a time, regard 12.0 as max. In a bolt gun it should give you around 2800 yo 3000 fps. This is NOT a low-pressure round, but its cheap and pleasant, and a bit quieter than full-house.
Have fun,
Tom

Oughtta be able to go cheaper than that....

Sure enough, I dusted off my Sierra loadbook and there it is. IMR-4895 with 45 grain bullet, start is 25.1 (3000 fps) and max is 26.3 (3200 fps). Not a max speed load for that bullet, but AT $72 PER 8 LBS OF IMR-4895 HOW COULD YOU GO WRONG??? I'd use a Rem 7 1/2 primer myself, and that's what the load calls for too.

Plinking is plinking, so who cares if you cut a kernel every once in a while? Go with the IMR-4895 for cheap shootin'. Get it at www.hi-techammo.com

the Speer Manual #13 lists a 45gr bullet reduced load of min 11.0gr to max 12.0gr of XMP 5744 and lists a mzl. vel. of 1949 & 2091fps. The hornet is about 3-400fps faster. I use a 40gr bullet with 14-15gr of 2400 mag. pistol powder for a cheaper and more quiet load. I think I found the load @ MD SMITHS reloading pages.

Plinker load for .223

I haven't tried these loads at 100 yards yet but, the accuracy at 25 yards in 1/4 inch.
223 Remmington:
4.0 to 5.0 grains of Bullseye
5.6 grains of Unique
22 Hornet:
7.3 grains of 4227 [It gives a nickel size group at 100 yards.]
4.1 grains of Unique
Lee Precision sells a cute little computer crogram for $5 that allows you to take the powder you use, now and down load it to your selected velocity. Page 90 to 93 in their loading manuals tells about it.
