8mm Mauser reloading

I reload for an 8mm Mauser with the .323" round. I'm using Remington 185grn Spitzer rounds with 46 grains of IMR 4895 powder and CCI primers.

Thus far this is a great round for my rifle and I get great accuracy.

Is there anyone else on here who reloads the 8mm '98 Mauser and what rounds have you come up with, if you don't mind my asking.

Your load is a tad bit hotter than mine; I use 46.0 of IMR 4895 with a 150 Speer spitzer and it shoots just fine. Try some 4064 if you have it; works great too.

150gr Sierra Pro-Hunter
50.5gr - IMR 4895
Rem case
BR2 primer
3.050 coal

I chose the 150gr because the ammo manufactured for the M48
was about 150gr, that makes the iron sight and original scope cammed for
that round very close
and a flat base bullet because I will be shooting at 100 to 200 yards
and they had smaller groups than the boat tails at that range,
(the boat tails did better above 200 yards)
That powder charge is a wide sweet spot( I may be hunting in varring
temperatures)

175 gr. Sierra Spitzer #2410 ahead of 49.5 grs of H380, OAL = 3.100 inches, Winchester WLRP.

This is a published load well below max. and easy on the guns that are at least 70 years old.

I haven't loaded a heap of 8mm for my old Mauser, and what I have loaded hasn't impressed me a whole lot, so I wouldn't say that it's worth sharing.

However... I have had some fun making my own 8x57 brass from .30-06, and it was -really- easy to do.

If you haven't done it, it's as simple as using the Lee cutting system for the 8mm Mauser on some decapped .30-06 brass, and after it's been cut down, you lube them up well and run them through the 8x57 FL sizer.

That's all it takes to make 8x57 brass and it works fine.

I'm in the process of converting 400 cases of .270 Winchester for my semi-auto M53/MG-42. I've already destroyed one Lee trimmer pilot (threads wore out), so I've decided that for high volumes it's best to have a lathe type. A Forester trimmer is on the way.

I'm trimming off 8mm per case, that's about 8 feet of trimming for all 400 cases!

I've found for .270 brass I have to expand the case mouth with my .308 die first, then use the 8mm die, otherwise I risk cracking a neck. Forming is done in an RCBS Trim/Form Die. I anneal the neck and shoulder of the case prior to all of this.

The beauty is once fired .270 or .30-06 brass is 1/4 the price of 8mm Mauser. I've paid for all of the tooling, including the trimmer in my first batch!

If I had to trim that much off, I think I'd make a jig/holder and use a fine tooth jig saw. Then finish with the trimmer.

My Yugo does real well with 48gr IMR 4064 and 185gr REM Corelokts. This is a hot load but not max in my rifle. YMMV
