S & W m 17-2 front sight replaceable?

hello,
just acquired a 17-2 22 revolver and it is really nice for the age (late 60's w 734xxx sn i think). The front sight (standard target) is a little dinged and i think if it is a simple proceedure and i can find one i would like to replace or upgrade to one of the other sight options that were offered on the gun...
is this pretty simple to do?
thanks for your insight.

Well, no. It seems simple, but it is very easy to mar the front sight base and end up with an awful looking mess that involves polishing and rebluing the gun.* I think I would call S&W; they have the tools and the experience.

*Do not, repeat not, ask me how I know.

You might want to check out the Midway USA gunsmithing videos on Youtube. They have one out there where they install one of those colored epoxy inserts into a front sight that is just a plain ramp. Doesn't look too hard if you are handy with a few tools.
