Why not a Mossberg MMR?
I've been "window" shopping for my first AR rifle for some time now.
(thankfully, window-shopping wasn't banned in the "SAFE" act my wonderful governor dictated upon us, at least I don't think it was...) I have come across this: http://www.mossberg.com/product/rifl...tactical/65011 Not much technical info, which is concerning... But it can be had for around $660 NIB! Of course the Palmetto is in the same ballpark ~$800, but the MMR comes with a quad rail and a fancy-schmancy grip --all for $140 less. (that would buy a few rounds, even now!) I've searched around the forum and found only very limited comments about this rifle. Has anyone had any experience with the MMR; are there any known issues? How about precision? Reliability? I'm sure it's not mil-spec, but I'm not one who has nightmares about non-mil-spec rifles... Does anyone have technical specs on these rifles? (chrome-lining, materials, etc.) Any comments will be appreciated... well, almost any. Thanks |

Well, after some more searching, I did come across some information:
receiver: forged 7075 T6 aluminum bolt is manufactured from Carpenter 158 bolt and barrel are 100% high pressure tested (HPT) with military M197 or SAMMI equivalent proof ammunition and 100% Magnetic Particle Inspected (MPI) barrel: AISI 4140 carbon alloy steel (NOT CHROME-LINED) rifling is button broached with 6 grooves at a 1:9 RH twist carbine length gas system Gas block pinned with taper pins M4 feed ramps includes dust cover no forward assist "mil-spec" receiver extension free floated quad picatinny rail "C" 3 ounce buffer staked gas key The pistol grip is a Stark Equipment Corp. #SE-1, it has a grip plug for battery storage an AR15 SP1 style bolt carrier I've read good and bad things about it. Does anyone have any first-hand information? Definitely seems to be a budget rifle, but then a lot of people are on budgets... |

Stark grip of shame right out of the box. Not for me...
Lots of solid manufacturers with similar specs out there in that price range. |

Why not a Mossberg MMR?
When that same price can get a PSA or S&W Sport...I would avoid the problems that regularly come with Mossberg guns.

Too many question marks about the Mossberg AR. I'd take that money and try to catch a sale at PSA. I do have first hand experience with PSA (own a complete upper and used their LBK) and can recommend them highly.
I hope someone who owns the Mossberg does chime in, I've never fired one myself. |

I don't have any experience with there autoading rifle, but I do have experience with there 930 autoloading shotgun and it was a POS. BTW you are not getting the same rifle as a PSA for the same price not even close IMO. Remember the ole saying "The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price"

I just sold my Mossberg shotgun. It was ok just wanted better quality. Getting versa max.
Do want to do an ar. Build? Palmetto State has full build around 900 and others. what would be benefit of building with different manufacturer s. White oak, rra etc. Is it to save cost are get higher precision (white oak uppers for ex. Look high quality but also are like 600.00) im finishing up stock enhancements to ak and mauser and mini14 but cant stand not havjng an ar! |

Winchester, Check out the Mossberg, if you like it's features buy it and have fun shooting. Mossberg makes excellent barrels and because it doesn't say Daniel Defense on the side does not mean the rifle will not be reliable. I have not handled one but apparently you have and only you will make the final decision.

I haven't actually handled one, just came across on a website. There are no AR's to handle in my state.
I'm not super excited about the lack of FA and chrome, and I think I probably would lean towards a PSA or a 6920. (After, of course, we move to a new state) I would love to do a build, I'd love to build on a RRA lower with 2-stage, and top it off with a nice mid-length 1:8 by a reputable manufacturer. But I haven't seen a way that I could do that for the price I could get a complete PSA. I'm not a fan of carbine length on a 16" barrel, and I would probably benefit more from a 1:8 than a 1:7. I'd be shooting a lot of 55gr and not much over 62gr. I've never owned an AR (or any semi-automatic for that matter), and if I do get one, it'll need to be pretty close to exactly what I want it to be, cuz I don't really have a gun budget which would allow for upgrades, mods... Honestly I just want to have one before we get an executive order or something that makes them impossible to get. |

mossberg is best known for their shotguns. rifles are a different story. I know mossberg lever actions have never been held in high regard, perhaps less regard than rossi. they exacerbated the problem when they started throwing tri rails and M4 stocks on them and adding chainsaw wrap around grips to their shotguns so they can be fired from the hip...
most people now look at mossberg as being highly impractical and mediocre at best. however their new MVP bolt actions get pretty good reviews from most of the members here that own them. a bolt action that takes AR15 mags sounds like a really fun rifle but I just haven't found the time or money to try one for myself. on that note however, even those have seemed lacking in the fit/finish regard when I've handled them in the shop. the bolts are loose and sloppy and the wood feels cheap and poorly done. do I doubt any of the reports about good accuracy and reliability? no I like to give everyone the benefit of the doub but it seems that mossberg is content just to prey on the mall ninjas that want evil black lever actions and surf on the wave of money from the M500 contracts with the military.

If I were you, I would buy a good quality lower and Bolt Carrier Group (the stuff that gets really hard to find in a "panic") SOON. Then build up what you really want as your budget allows. That being said, I have a Windham SRC that I like a lot and it's also in your price range.

I'm with the chorus here.
I just sent my Mossberg 930 JM Pro back for the second time for the exact same problem. I don't think they even bothered to read the detailed description of the problem, that they suggest you provide, before doing whatever they did. Finding a good AR these day, with or without a big name on the side, is pretty easy. I wonder why they omitted the forward assist...could the upper be extruded rather than forged?

Why not a Mossberg MMR?
I think they didn't use the forward assist because the didn't have any left after using them on their tactical .30-30

Lots of Stark grips are put on to cover up trigger guard ears broken off by first time AR builders. Hmmm, I wonder about Mossberg AR assemblers...

I think we have a consensus here. The MMR isn't worth the few dollars saved. And I like the idea of getting a few parts at a time, starting with the lower and BCG. That being said, where is the best place to buy those items, and other parts as well- upper, barrel, etc.?

I have a couple PSA lower parts kits in my lowers and they are good to go. One trigger is gritty but it may smooth out. I'm not a PSA fan boy but that PSA deal with the Aimpoint is unbelievable and should be on the short list of anyone looking for an AR today.
