Plated vs. Lead vs. FMJ
I just started reloading and have made it through my first box of 124 gr. LRN. For variety's sake, I think I am going to try some plated bullets next time. My little loading book does not have plated bullets listed, so should I load them to FMJ or lead specs?? Thanks!

Somewhere between the two. I shoot Berry's plated in my .44 Special and .45 ACP. The price is almost the same as lead but with less cleaning.

Plated bullets need a little more powder than lead for the same velocity, and jacketed bullets need quite a bit more powder for the same velocity.
The Speer manual lists a TMJ bullet; that's a plated bullet and I use that whenever the bullet weight/powder used synch up. And Rainer has plated bullet load data on their web site, and I hear they have a pretty good plated bullet. Ditto on the recommendation for Berry's, that's my favorite for 45ACP. West Coast Bullets are also very nice. |
