I asked the same question until I landed a like-new Wingmaster Magnum Lightweight in 20g. at a recent gunshow. I'll never part with it.

BTW, 12s and 20s get along just fine in the 'ole safe.

Even then, I still say anyone who can hold the gun tight against their shoulder can handle it.. Its kind of a dumb arguement when a pretty gal of 5'3 can handle magnums without a problem... and does pretty dang good with just about any other loads."

Perhaps that is the best contribution to this discussion.

There is no difference between 20g and 12g-non-magnum, it's as simple as that. However, economic reasons dictate you should use 12g.
Simple:
shotgun = 12g
all around rifle = .308/.30-06
revolver = .38sp/.357
semi-auto = 9mm

If you ignore economic reasons I'd prefer the 20g, say for a beautiful hunting gun without shooting trap etc.

Don't let ego interfer with your decisions! In fact, most people tend to take too large calibers which diminishes the fun because of higher prices and more recoil.

I don't think I have even seen a 28 ga before and wally world seldom has any shells as do the local gun shops. Not a very popular guage here from what I see. I guess people get the .410 instead. Ammo is still pricey but available almost anywhere.

It seems almost redundant to even reply to this original thread, specifically the original comment--mainly because it lacks the intelligence I think someone should have before ever handling a firearm. BUT, I'll throw my 2-cents in anyway.

I have a 12 guage, AND a 20 guage. WHY? Because they have individual purposes. I use the 12 on larger birds when I don't have to hike ridges, and the 20 is great for things like blue grouse when I want more than a puff of sticky feathers left. It's a matter of using the right tools for the job---Ancient Chinese Proverb: "Don't use a cannon to kill a mosquito."

every caliber and gauge has it place and context. I would rather have the 12 but have the smaller 2.75 inch shells. I have fired the 20 and it felt nice. both have their place.

I personally dont care much for 12 gauge. My main shotgunning is skeet and i would love to have the money to shoot 28 or .410. It is more of a challenge. But at the same time i have an odd desire to shoot a 10 gauge

This thread is so old it amazes me it continues. I'm betting the troll who started it is off line, maybe off earth by now, and yet it goes on. Of course the answer to "Why a 20?" is the same as all the other answers to all the other stupid "Y" questions. BECAUSE, THAT'S WHY! Same reason sky is blue and fire is hot.

This thread gets dumber every time I come back to it. Ramping up the size and loading on shotguns is supposed to be to some purpose. Bigger guns for bigger game or longer distances to the game. Somebody insisting on 12 Gauge as the only gun for real men has never lugged one cross country on an all day hunt for grouse or dove or field mice. Get a grip, guys, and match the gun and the load used to the game or target conditions that apply. No need to go nuclear if you are just wanting to shoot clay targets, and for sure no point to taking a .410 afield if you are hunting grizzlies.

He is the guy who uses a 12 guage auto and on opening day of deer season, as soon as it starts to get light, you hear him ripping off shells as fast as he can pull the trigger as the deer (he thinks he saw a deer anyway) trots away unharmed.

I really enjoy the 20ga caliber, I only use shotguns for skeet shooting, and a 20ga will break a clay pigeon just as well as a 12 ga, I even like to use .410 for skeet. The lower recoil means I can shoot for longer than if I used a 12ga.

Why haul out the 12gauge goose shooter, for an afternoon dove hunt,
clays don't care what their shot with......heres a hint GENIUS....it's
actually HARDER to hunt with the small guages. So if you need to feel more
like a MAN I recommend trying alaskan brown bear hunting with a .410
in #8 shot.....we need less of your kind in the world.

P.S. I only own a 12gauge.
