6920 is a great weapon. 6940 is even better.

I think Colt has used a few different stocks and rear sights on the basic model 6920, but I don't think there's that much difference between them.

The big problem is that Colt quit making AR's for the civilian market a few months back, so prices have blown up and there's almost none left at retailers by now.

Seems like you can't get one for much less than $1100 or so these days, which is the other problem. $1100 buys a lot of AR15 these days, which just about puts you into the POF/BCM/LWRC/DD etc range. And that's if you're ok with the boring Colt furniture.

Look's like King's Firearms might still have some.

I’ve seen Colt change minor various things on the 6920 throughout the years. The main differences I’ve seen are the roll marks on the lower (they changed all regular 6920s to say “M4 Carbine” some time in 2012 or 2013) and the attachments it comes with. Some time around 2012 or earlier (I can’t remember when exactly) they stopped coming with a removable carry handle and started coming with a Magpul rear sight. And sometime around 2013 or so they stopped coming with a Rogers Super Stock and just went back to a normal mil-spec M4 stock.

I’m fairly certain that they haven’t made any changes to the regular 6920 line since 2013. So a 2013 configuration should be the same as the most recently-available ones. Keep in mind that there was a line of 6920 SOCOMs and SOCOM 2s. Those had different rails and rear sights, and also had a heavy barrel. They also were marked ”M4A1” on the lower instead of ”M4 Carbine”.

I have a 6721, bull barrel version of the 6920. Very fine firearm but id be shocked if you find one at a retailer. In less than 2 weeks of their announcement for ceasing production of civilian rifles, nobody had one in stock, atleast the several sources I checked. You can probably find them on Gunbroker and the like but they’ll most likely be preowned if you find them and they’re probably 1500 plus by now.

Buds had them on sale for 850 about a week or two before the announcement and my brother in law bought one just because he saw the writing on the wall. He hasn’t even taken it out of the box. He told me I should get one but I didn’t. Wish like heck i did now.

People said that about the Python, and look what happened. if we get a blue president in 2020, Colt will promptly do an about-face when demand outpaces the market again.

Unless it's select-fire or could go in a museum... I think commercially produced firearms are a pretty poor investment. You'd be better off building your own for cheaper and shooting it without worry of perceived depreciation.

Ha, funny you mentioned the Python. That same brother in law is drooling over those. He said he wants to buy both barrel lengths.

Yeah, its not much of an “investment”, maybe in the right conditions (that aren’t here now) to the right person you could profit a grand if you can be ok with price gouging, ha. I just am an old Colt fanboy at heart, ill take the ridicule. I would have just wanted another one to have it incase they never came back. The good sale was just a bonus. However I’m not a brand snob any longer. I picked up a PSA stainless mid length upper and a lower back in December ($350 combined minus ffl and shipping) and absolutely love it. Very accurate and i hacked off the front A2 fixed sight post and threw an $89 PA non-magnification red dot on it. 2” at 100 yards all day long. Was pleasantly surprised. Oops, got off topic.
