Tatical .410

Hey guys, yea I know this sounds stupid but I'm looking to build a little brother for my winchester 1200. Going to use it for plinking mostly and maybe some small game.

I want it to feel as close to my 1200 as possible which is setup as follows

12ga
+5 mag extension
polychoke
Pistol grip collapsable stock.
26" vent rib with front and rear bead

I really wish they made 1200's in .410 but alas nothing I've ever seen leads me to believe anything less then 20ga was produced.

What I'm looking for is what in your opinion would be the best base platform. I've never shot an 870 but hear a lot of good things.. I have shot a few 500's and didn't at all like the way the action felt.

Trying to do this a cheaply as possible so if there's any cheapo brands out there with the availability of these kinds of accessories I would love to hear about them.

My only must haves are,
26-28" barrel
dual bead sights.
fixed full choke or a barrel that will accept screw ins.
Ability to add collapsable stock/PG
.410
NOT a tang saftey

Would like to haves are,
Ability to extend mag full legnth of the barrel
smoothest action possible
3" chamber
interchangeable barrels.

don't handicap the fellow with a 410. 410 is an experts gun not a novice starters unit. Go find an older remington wingmaster 20 guage or a youth model 20 ga 870 and call it done. Save the money on the tacti-cool poo and buy more ammo.

I'm not a novice and I'm not trading the 1200 lol. I love that gun.

I'm just looking to add a very similar shotgun to add to the collection in all aspects except gauge.

You have an uphill climb ahead.

While Browning, Remington and Mossberg make fine little 410 pumps, there's no exact match to your 12 gauge Winchester. And aftermarket accessories for them are scarce as honest politicians.

Personally, I regard a defensive 410 as a viable tool for in house use,especially for older or physically challenged people. However, there's little choice out there for those who agree with that.

I suggest trying out the ones on the market and making your choice, then learning t0 live with a plain jane 410.....

Is the actual reciever of the .410 guns different from their larger brothrs and not accepot the same stocks?

As a general rule, yes - the .410 guns have smaller receivers.

Oh dear

I suppose this will be more difficult then I thought.

I don't really plan on using this for HD but I certinally don't laugh at the idea of a 100gr slug moving at 1800fps. or even 4 balls of 00.

I think this would make a really fun plinking and small/medium game with the feeling of an HD gun but with a longer barrel practical for game and basically 0 recoil. I just love the short LOP feel of a collapsable stock and pistol grip.

The only reason I would buy or own a .410 would be for fun, absolutely fun that's it. (Or of course if I was way rich and could just buy everything i wanted , I'd have an amazing gun collection, why not .410's included right? Hey I'm rich don't forget).

For me, all the money I'd spent on a .410, I'd much rather add another tactical shotgun [pump?] to my M930SPX main baby. I'd rather add a M590A1, Benelli Supernova Tactical, or dare I say an 870 Tactical or Mariner to make as a project gun and put the Magpul Stock, Magpul Forend, maybe Trijicon Night Sight Ghost Rings, And other goodnesses. LET ALONE the several hundred on ammo you'd have to spend to stock it up. Rather just get a ton of 00Buck, 7.5 Bird, Rifled Slugs, and home defense premium packs for the 12 gauge.

my 1200 is more then suited for anything except perhaps high altitude bird hunting (2-3/4 chamber and 26" barrel) why would i ever need another 12 gauge? I would get an autoloader but living in an oppresed states makes that endeavour not worthwhile.

Because NO shotgun does all shotgun things equally well.

I have some cherished 870s here. 4 are 12s, and while there's overlap, they have different functions.

One's served in a variety of roles, but now is a pure D house gun.

Another's prime function is venison acquisition.

One's a parts gun, and has lots of dead birds behind it.

And one's now Son's, a field model older than his Mother. He uses it for Wobble, SC and Trap.

Besides those, there's a dedicated clays O/U, and a little single shot for new shooters and woods running.

The single's going to go to a friend when he returns from A-stan in October.

but my 1200 does just fine with trap and skeet. Sure a nice o/u would be better but I'm talking pumps and I don't see another pump having any advantage over the 1200 (other then maybe a couple inches on the barrel)

For deer the 1200 does just fine. I generally hunt with slugs and its very accurate out to 50 yards or so (farthest I've tried...probably accurate out to much further). at least minute-of-vitals lol.

Some people will say that the 26" barrel is too long for HD use but I disagree. With the collapsable stock and short LOP It's even less of a difference in OAL from the 18-20" guns. and the 14+1 capicity has me covered even in case of the zombie acpolopise

The .410 I would like to build will basically be a goof off gun and something for rabbits and squirells. Its just not fun with a 12 for me and I need something a little more challenging (would love to use a .22 on the little guys but ALAS living in a commie state means that's outlawed as well.)

.410s do ok, and I own 2. An H&R and a Rossi Circuit Judge. Fun to shoot guns.
Winchester and Federal make 3 inch 000 shells by the way. They hold 5 pellets.

Got try try my hands on an 870 and a 500 today. I have to say I do not like the feel of the action at all on either of them. the 870 slightly edged the 500 but still both felt a little clunky and not nearly as refined as my 1200.

Is it becuase they are new and my 1200 is worn in? Or do they just not make em like they used to?

I guess beggars cant be choosers

Well you are $ Out of Luck. Your choices are standard stock or PGO. No aftermarket maker that I have seen offers what you want in 410. For that matter almost all of them only offer what you seek in 12 gauge.

Now if you can adapt a John Masen rear piece to the PGO stock (theirs are two piece systems) you may be able to get what you seek....except for the tang safety which is what Mossy has. I don't think the Rem. offers a PGO 410.

Another option is to buy a Butler Creek stock and strip the folder off of it and adapt to a PGO.

Your other choice is to have what you want made but that will cost some money.

I wonder about anything in 28 gauge? Only problem there is getting ammo will be a real PITA so I would much rather go with .410

Most likely going to have to modify something into what I would like.

Damn shame I can get a semi auto. That .410 AR looking shotgun or .410 saiga would fit the bill perfectly
