not a good idea. 5.56 has a higher pressure tolerance among other things. but you can shoot .223 in a 5.56 chamber.

The 5.56 Nato has a longer lead, neck and is loaded to a little higher pressure than 223 Remy. You can shoot 223 in a 5.56 NATO chamber, but not vice versa. Also the Wylde chamber is ok with either NATO or Remy.

The 5.56 mm chamber has a longer throat, aka. leade, aka freebore. What it amounts to is that there is more room between the point on the bullet curvature (ogive) that will contact the lands of the barrel and the lands themselves. There are several reasons why this is done, but what concerns us when choosing the right ammo is that 5.56 mm ammo could develop dangerous overpressure in a .223 rem chamber.

Holy Moses! - isn't someone going to jump-in and claim that they're identical and then argue this point 'til they're blue in the face - all the while confusing people and causing an avalanche of 'is my AR OK?' posts.
This always seems to happen on other gun forums - I want more uninformed opinion or I'm taking my comments elsewhere |
