CZ 75 SP-01 vs P-01
Which should I get? I held the P-01 at the gun show and it was literally perfect. I went in wanting to also try the SP-01, but none were there. Do the SP-01 and P-01 have the exact same grip dimensions? Is the P-01 harder to modify (i know CZs that have decockers are considered harder to modify)? Will it feel any different than the P-01 (besides the extra weight)? I don't know what I should do!! Ahhhh!
This will be my first handgun. P-01 felt amazing 75B felt just alright (meh) So SP-01 will feel ??? Last edited by Kazaam; October 20, 2012 at 12:27 PM. |

It's not so much a matter of which gun is technically better, as I don't think there's a great deal of difference there, but rather which gun feels better in the hand... and do you want/need a 1913 rail. I've shot both side by side and I prefer the 'B'. I don't care for lots of grippy strap surface and I don't need a 1913 rail. Aesthetics might be an issue for some... I do like the more "cold war look" of the 'B', but I had a late 70s first version CZ75 at one time, and still miss it.
My personal CZ, a 75B SA has, oddly enough, a bevertail closer to a SP-01 than a standard 'B' model... and I do prefer that. You really need to handle and shoot them both side by side... or, just throw the dice and get something. They're both CZs, and they both feel excellent when compared to many other guns, so you can't go wrong in that regard. C

i like the 75b. better ergos for my hands. i think the sp-01 is too wide, and that's saying something. i have huge hands. i own both, but i like the 75b better.

I have huge hands as well and love the SP-01... It's my favorite CZ actually.

I love my CZ 75B but, wish it had the decocker like my brothers Phantom does.

SP-01 is a step up. Probably the most noticeable difference is a way better trigger right from the factory. Anyway, I still prefer my 85 for its history, ergonomy and design. It's a total classic. Czech 1911.

However, now that I own it, I realize that the SP01 is much more comfortable to shoot. I have big hands, and although the 75 doesn't draw lots of blood like a GI 1911 does for me, its downswept tang is uncomfortable after a few mags. I hate to have to go through the hassle, but I am going to have to ditch my 75 and buy an SP01 instead. If you have big hands you may want to skip straight to the SP01.

The ergos on the SP-01 are perfect for me and I prefer having the rail for a light as the SP-01 is my main home defense gun. That said, I prefer the classic look of the 75B. You really can't go wrong with either....CZ makes fantastic pistols.

I've had my 75B for many years, and really enjoy shooting it. However, I really like shooting my friends all steel SP-01 for range work. I am not a big light rail guy, but I like the additional weight in the muzzle, and I also like the upswept beavertail. I wish the 75B had it. For range or home defense, I'd go SP-01.

Prefer the hold and balance of the 75B over the SP01

p-01 is the compact counterpart to the fullsized SP-01 so odds are they will feel similar.

The SP will be considerably heavier, and not ideal if you ever plan to carry it sometime in the future. I've had a 75bd for years and much prefer my new P01.
It is literally a gun you can grow with as needs change. I will suggest two things if you get either gun. Change the hammer spring to 15#, and get a TruGlo front sight. World of difference. |

I have both, but am thinking about selling the SP to a friend.
The SP is bigger and heavier, therefore somewhat faster to come back on target in rapid fire mode. The regular SP01 also has ambi safeties, which some people prefer. (My best friend, a lefty, is one of those people; his only complaint with his CZ75 is the lack of an ambi safety. Hence, he may buy my SP.) The P01 has a decocker, left side (IE right handed) only, so if you don't like decockers it is not the right choice. If you do like decockers, then the P01 is good, and you might consider the SP01 Tactical. I don't like the extended magazines on the SP01 for carry. For competition they may be just fine, but they don't conceal well. However, regular CZ75 mags will fit flush in the SP01 if you want to use it for CCW. The P01 is shorter in length and in grip height, so it's easier to conceal. It has an alloy frame, while the SP01 has a steel frame, so the P01 is noticeably lighter. The P01 is generally easier to carry, but not much harder to shoot. Both have rails, if you are into mounting things on pistols. (I am not.) The P01 can accept CZ75 and SP01 magazines, but they will protrude from the bottom. The 14rd standard magazines fit mostly flush, with a tapered polymer baseplate that makes an unobtrusive but comfortable little finger rest. If you want to shoot IDPA, the stock SP01 is overweight, although CZ Custom Shop advertises a mod they can do to lighten it in order to make weight. My personal SP01 does not do well with 147 grain rounds, but runs perfectly with 115 through 127. My P01 seems to run any 9mm I feed it. YMMV on that, but I have read some custom shops offer polishing the chamber to make it more friendly with 147s, so this may or may not be an issue in general. Edit: With regard to grip dimensions, the P01 and SP01 have similar grip dimensions except for height. With regard to modifications, please note that you cannot change a safety model to a decocker model as the holes in the frames are not in the same places. |

CZ 75B is so fine I have no interest in anything else. I mean I'm hitting targets at 25 yards. Can't wait for winter to daily CCW again. For now, my Glock 26 fills the bill.

There were two identical threads on this poll, so they've been merged. Sorry for any confusion. We now return to our regularly scheduled programming.
Oh, and OP: get both.

Well, if you plan on carrying it you may prefer the P-01. If you prefer decockers like I do, you'll want the P-01.
Tom is right, just buy all the CZ line (I'm working on that) and you'll be a happy camper. |

Its a hard choice as each has its own merits. I own a CZ75 and a P-01 and find myself shooting and carrying the P-01 more than the 75. The P-01 has perfect ergonomics for me, reliability and accuracy is exceptional. So I guess its the P-01.

Depends what you want.
In my case I say the P-01 because I wanted that particular 9mm for carry. I selected it highly influenced by favorable reports about rigorous testing. I find it to be the ideal 9mm pistol for my style of concealed carry and personal protection. I never saw a value or a purpose for an actual "safety". SO I don't much look at pistols that have them. I carry it loaded and de-cocked. First shot will be double action. This gun is heavy since it's not a plastic frame. And that heft, along with the contoured grip, makes for a solid, dependable, firearm that feels good in the hand. |
