Well thank you for the information about using the Small Rifle in place of the Small Pistol... Well no GO, I can not find any primers weither it is Rifle or Pistol. I guess if I wanted to load about 10,000 shot gun shells, I would be ok... BUT I cant shot shotgun shells out of my Sig or Glock. I can not believe the craziness that is circling this whole Primer crisis. I mean I can understand how the Ammo supplies are gone, but I mean hoarding uppers of 500,000 - 2,000,000 primers? I mean I dont know many people that will shoot that much in a years time... (Plus here is a question for you, Dont they have a shelf life?) So how many people really need to go out and buy up all the Primers and have a total of over 500,000 in there stash just so other people cant have any. that to me is stupid and that is the Reason that this has happened. I mean look at a guy like me who just wants to find 1,000 - 3,000 primers so that I can shoot better at the range and competition, I cant even find any primers just to get to a point I can start realoading...
As I said I have a Lee Turret Press on the way in about 2 weeks, and as of right now I CAN NOT even load the first round, because I can get Brass, Bullets and Powder... So all I am lacking is those Damn Primers. Anyone have any ideas??? |

Dan, I want to ask Warren Buffet about how I don't have enough money and people like him have too much but you see free market economy is free market economy and not just when it is convenient.
Some people stocked up but I have always tried to keep ahead on primers at about 10K per caliber. That is enough for me but not what I should have done when they were $20.00 shipped so I could be selling them to those who don't plan well enough. Primers do not really have a shelf life. I got 1,000 LP primers from the late 40's last year and they all shot perfect. IMO, this will pass so if you are overstocked now might be a good time to cash in for profit and do Dan a favor to boot. Not saying you should give up your stash just saying this primer bubble will burst and when prices come down the ones not complaining because they have too many will start to whine about all the on paper money they thought they were worth that disappeared from that free market economy they now love. Wulfmann,
I dont want hand outs, and yes you are right about free market... And yes maybe I should have started reloading years ago, BUT, I was not interested in Comp shooting than, and only shooting about 500 handgun rounds a year. Well since I got married and my wife loves guns, we are now shooting about 500-800 a month and I am working on practice for a IDPA qualifier. I want to rank as high as I can, so I have been told that reloading will increase your accuracy, so that is why I am buying a Reloader. As I have said in previous posts on this thread, I CAN afford to buy factory Ammo, but why? I enjoy anything that has to do with Handguns and shooting, and if I can add reloading to my likes, Well that is what I would like to do. I am not telling peple to come off their stash at all, but if you ALREADY own 100,000 primers... Why the H**L do you need to go buy another 10,000 that someone new to the reloading game could buy. Someone that has 10,000 or 20,000 of a certain Cal... I would like to get there (SOMEDAY), but those that are Hoarding 100's of thousands or Millions... That is just plain STUPID. This is my HONEST OPINION of this situation. |

I agree with you Dan. The comp shooters did not do it. That been going on like for ever. It was the regular guy buying way more than they need. I am happy if I have 500 to 1,000 of what I am reloading for. I shoot some target stuff like making new loads, and use them for hunting, and loading for friends. I just enjoy doing it, or have someone tell me they have taken a nice buck with one of my loads. I just keep enough for what I need. I know it keeps forever but I like to stay as fresh as I can. This whole thing is nuts. Just because of a couple of stupid rumors, and I do mean stupid. Has far as what primer to use I would get a good manual for the bullet you are going to use, and use the size they say. I know certain combos will work, but you should not do that. They are made different for pistol, and rifle. Having some good manuals is the way to go. The more the better, than you can cross check a whole bunch of stuff, and make up some really good loads. It is to easy making a typo when giving out information on the net. Dont believe it till you see it in the manual. In the mean time, and I know its easy for me to say hang in there they will come back. The people that are hoarding will either go broke or finally get all they need. You are going to love reloading by the way it sounds with all your shooting. It is a good clean sport. Take care, and keep it safe! Jim

I do agree with you Dan and having a wife that loves guns is certainly great for you.
I have to remind all that in a free market that sometimes means others out smart us. I actually just sold half of my primers at the gun show for $30.00 a thousand, lowest price in the show, because I believe this hysteria will come down like the housing bubble. Unfortunately those that must buy primers and never kept inventory are not only finding objectionable prices (like GB at $100.00 per K on some) but none at any price in some areas. I do believe this will be short lived but the 20K I now am down to will not go anywhere at any price because no one knows for sure. And while I agree on anyone who has 100K and buys more being annoying that to is a free market event. Some people get upset because they go to Wal-Mart and watch one guy buy the entire pallet (many gun stores do this because they are having trouble getting ammo) and there is none for them. Some Wal-Marts are now restricting ammo sales to 2 boxes per person. I understand the reasoning but is that not a form of socialism or at least contrary to a free market? The whole basis for Wal-Mart's success is buying out entire inventories so they can control the markets in various areas driving out small mom and pop stores and yet they now object to some little guy doing the same thing (in principle) with ammo. If we are a free market then we should be disappointed someone out smarted us not insist they not be able to. IMO Wulfmann

Woop, woop! Found some primers today. I was up scouting around the Carlos Avery WMA north of the Twin Cities, contemplating a deer hunt there. On the way back I a saw a Gander Mountain store in Forest Lake. I stopped in, asked if they had any primers. The guy said no except for some large pistol magnum primers. Ding! They had a half dozen boxes of Federal 155 match. I was tempted to buy them all but only bought one (a 1,000 primers will last me quite awhile). Only cost $40 (yeesh).
And, boy, had they jacked up the prices of factory ammo. They were asking $50 for a box of Magtech .44 specials. No thanks. |

Local store got some small magnum pistol primers in this week. They limited me to 300 but that's ok. Looks like they are starting to trickle in at least.

I am hearing even my neighbors who just deer hunt talk about it now. They are going to Wal-Mart etc. to get there deer rounds, and finding them sold out. People who only hunt deer, and make two to four shots a year are buying like ten box's, and bricks of 22 shells. Can't belieive it. If the prices dont go up I will S_ _ _ ! It's the regular guy doning it to themselves. Our deer season does not open till November!

I think the fee went up 2.50 cents I guess that could be it. I think we all been buying large amounts since hazmat been there for some time. No doubt it makes more sense to buy four pounds of powder than one, or three thousand primers instead of 1,000 but that always been that way. Myself I can not afford to pay about $800.00 for 20,000 primers. If you got 4,000 shots on a barrel that would wear out five guns.

Anyhow, a big honkin' sign was posted at the ammo counter... "A Strict Limit of 1 (one) box of ammunition is allowed PER CUSTOMER, PER DAY - No exceptions" Ugh. |

Well still no Primers on the West coast... I am about 1-2 weeks away from getting my Nice New Shinny Lee Turret Deluxe Kit and I wont be able to reload not a Single 9mm or 40 S&W... I am really frusturated, but I am not so frusturated that I am going to spend like $50-$75 for 1000 on gunbroker. I still currently have about 2000 9mm and about 500 40 S&W factory ammo I bought about 3 months ago, so I will just keep shooting that tell I can get my hands on some stupid Primers. I can not believe that I can get Brass, Bullet and Powder almost anywhere, but I can not get my hands on 1000 Primers to get started. Totally a stupid BS situation we have going on right now. Sorry it is just frusturating that I cant get any to start a new hobby.

I hear ya!
I just started reloading a few months ago and thank GOD my father had stockpiled about 5,000 or so of various primer sizes. The first week I was learning how, I dropped a few primers here and there and couldn't find them on the floor, so I just kept going. Not anymore! These things are like GOLD right now. If I do drop one, it becomes and all out man-hunt. Ugh. |

where are the reloading supplies?
walked into my local sports shop here in central ca where I always buy my powder and got to talking to the store owner about availabilty of stuff like powder and primers and the store owner was complaining about how hard it was to get powder. I told the store owner I noticed he always has a decent supply of powder and he told me thats because he had ordered a whole bunch of powder at one time like four months ago.the owner also informed me he had no idea when he was getting more powder or primers or anything else ammo related. It seems like this shortage isnt going to ease up anytime soon.I think from now on Im going to just shoot my black powder replica guns.My wife an kid like shooting them better than my modern guns anyway.

I forgot to add that the stores shelves were empty of even the expensive handgun and rifle ammunition.went to bass pro shop and the shelves were bare.Walmart shelves were bare!Is everybody getting ready for world war three or something.I keep hearing stories of people buying a couple thousand dollars of ammunition at one time!I buy a box here and there but now I just shoot less.Thats my idea of hoarding i guess.Ammo and gun manufacturing companies must be making a fortune.Im starting to wonder if some of our ammo and guns are being sold overseas to other countries and thereby causing this shortage.Maybe Im just paranoid. It would seem that this ammo shortage would be considered a national security issue. Is the military running out of ammo also?Well I just posted this to get this stuff off my mind sorry about my grammer and spelling.

Tiber? Where are you located in Central, CA? I am in Fresno and let me tell you... I cant find anything reloading related here in town. I was wondering about Bass Pro up there by Stockton, but I guess I will save my gas and time, and just stay down here. I need 1000 primers just so I can use my reloader for the first time.

Too bad you live in a state where there are 30,000,000 people to share what reloading components are on hand. People in less populated areas have it easier, I've had little problem getting most of what I want through local stores. |

Where are the primers? - Merged Threads
So why aren't primers showing up in retail? Have the manufacturers stopped making them? If so, why? I can see them not being available for a short time but if the manufacturers are making them continously where are they? Someone in the distribution line holding on to them?
