EG Makarov

So I was in a fun store and found this great looking EG Makarov.

I disassembled it, checked the bore, checked all of the functions, decocker etc. It's all good...

But the slide has a little rattle to it. I'm not talking about the firing pin, it's the slide itself being somewhat loose tolerance-wise.

Is there something to do about this? Should I pass on it?

They were made to be durable and reliable and un-finicky so I wouldn't worry about a little slide-play. If the internals don't appear as if it's been shot-to-death you should be good to go.

By EG I'm assuming you mean East German.

They are pretty much the best made of all of the Maks. My East German has a bit of slide looseness, but it's a military handgun made under the Communist system. It's also been 100% reliable.

It has a fixed barrel. Some looseness and rattle should not affect accuracy or functioning.

Is $500 reasonable?

There is almost 0 wear. Barrel/bore is like new and 98% condition on inside of slide.

No... $500 is way too much... Look on Gunbroker.com for examples.

You can get a better quality NEW gun for $500!

BTW, that doesn't look like an EG grip. East German grips I have seen have been black, with no star molded in.

The outside of the barrel will tell the tale. Scuffed?

I'll have to look at the outside of the barrel tomorrow.

As to the grips, yeah I noticed that too, but it is stamped Germany and has the correct shape in the box.

Price sounds too high. I know the value has gone up in seven years, but I bought one in '06 from Cole's Dist. in excellent condition, little or no finish wear, and proper black grips without the star for $285.00
The one in the picture looks to have quite a lot of ware on the finish, and as mentioned the wrong grips.
BTW, my near like new East German Makarov also has a bit of slide movement side to side.

Imports have been marked wrong before. (Mostly you hear about Russian milsurp Makarovs labeled as Bulgarian.)

If it is an East German Makarov, they have always commanded significantly higher prices because the levels of fit and finish are head and shoulders above other Maks.

The triggers can be especially amazing for a Com-Bloc gun. The one on my Mak is a little stagy, but about half the weight of some of the Bulgarian Maks I've shot, and VERY smooth.

EG Maks are going for the mid to high 400s to over 500 on the auction sites.

Oh, and I think that the Russian ones had the brown grips with the molded star.

The rattle may be from the free floating firing pin. It shouldn't make too much noise though. A nice German Mak should be nearer to $400 than $500 IMHO. They are a little nice than some other Maks, having a different finish and a nicer trigger.

EG Maks are going for way more than $175. You got an outstanding deal!

I would place the value of an EG Mak more in the $350 - $400 depending on condition. Yeah, I bought mine for $100 when they were plentiful, and coming into the U.S. but that was a long time ago, late 90's I think.

Yes, I bought a bunch of those $100 EG Maks from Southern Ohio back in the early 90's. I still have 3 and I would place the market value of a nice one around $400 these days. Worth every penny.
