What Specialty Buckshot Choke?

For my Benelli M4?

If I was loading up on ammo right now, I would just be purchasing flight controlled BS, but I have hundreds of rounds of the regular stuff. As happy as I am with the accuracy of my M4 with slugs, I am not thrilled with BS at 50yds.

Buckshot at 50 yards that is not flight control, buffered, etc is not going to have tight patterns. Brand matters, but you will just have to experiment. Usually, one can find something in IC to IM that will work decently enough.

Realize that the buffered and FC buck is intended to be shot through Cylinder bores for the tightest groups.

I shoot an M2, and some of the cheap buck, like Estate, will do okay with LM where the Fiocchi tends to prefer M.

I run an older M1. I found years ago that it shot buck and slugs best with a modified tube in it.

I think “Flight control” buck patterns TOO tight. I want some pellet spread at closer ranges. Let the shotgun do what a shotgun does. Inside of 20 or so yards that spread allow you to shoot fast and let the pattern work for you. Flight control is still basically a slug at 10yds and smaller then a fist at 20.

I dont care about buckshot patterns at 50, or 100. Its slug time at those distances (or Rifle time)

I want to use the M4 for deer, buckshot is required, and I want to be able to take shots out to 50yds.

I have been impressed with the flight control out of my M4. But mine is actually a 1014 with a fixed choke.

Fifty yards is stretching it for a pattern of BS. Forty yards is what most coyote hunters pattern at. I load BBB lead for coyotes, sixty pellets in 2 3/4" shell. I'm happy with seven to nine pellets in a eight inch paper plate at forty yards. Of course this is out of a 23" barrel.

Where do you live? My state allows slugs for deer but prohibits BS. If you are hunting deer, you are probably using 00 or 000 BS. Not many pellets to begin with.

Out of curiosity, I shot some buckshot out of the IM barrel of my Trap gun.
It would put about half the 00 on a B27 at 45 yards.
Shells are better now.

My dad worked in power house and they used Slugs & 00 to shoot slag out of boilers. He would bring a box of 00 ever once in a while. We had a good assortment of 12g shotguns and was a ongoing collection. Dad was trap shooter & bird hunter. Dad was always pattering shotguns and we would shoot a couple 00 looking for good Fox gun. Bottom line is we never
found one. This was in 50s & 60s and it was Win or Rem 00 we were shooting. You get 40-50 yds and a Fox could hide in the pattern better than 50% of the time.
I haven’t hunted Virginia for years. Use to deer hunt George Washington National Forrest. I do remember Virginia was zones as far as legal hunting weapon for deer. Over to east was buckshot only. I think that OP country.

No way I’d shoot a deer at 50 yrds with buck…won’t be a “clean” kill most of the time.

It is a better comparison to use standard buck from a LM (or M) which will pattern better than C. Or use M for both and see how a choke ruins most of the benefit of FC wads.

I remember my dismay when I bought a Remington 870 with a Self defense length barrel.
It was the first shotgun I owned since I was a kid.
I enjoy target shooting and getting half inch groups at 100 yards.
It was shocking to me that not one pellet was on a man size target at 100 yards.

50 yards was not a whole lot better.
It was bought for home defense so 25 yards or so would be max probably. Laughing at myself that I didn’t see that coming.

Back when I deer hunted with hounds I used an extra full turkey choke and #1 buckshot......It was deadly on running deer. In fact most all members in my club used full choke or tighter. We got good patterns too.
