It's been a few years since I started this thread. I have my Mark V 257, good loads, and I'll offer some experience. First, it's not as overbore as you might think with modern powders, at least not according to Quickload. I'm loading 120 Nosler Partition over IMR-7828 SSC and 101 Barnes LRX over Re-25, and QL says 100% powder burn for both (26" bbl). Pretty sure the barrel burner part is true, though. So is the sub-MOA with a new Criterion barrel.
This rifle is all about MPBR, "hold on hair" as Roy said. For the Partition starting at 3,382, MPBR is 325 yards, for the Barnes starting at 3,533 it's 335 (+/-3"). No longer the champ, but pretty durn good for 1944. And neither bullet is running out of steam at that range. So what's it good for? Well, lot's of folks shoot elk with them, but not me. I'm a 30+bore, 180+slug for big deer and African antelope. But mulies, whitetails, pronghorns, and Africans like springbok at long (for me) range, I'm all in. Plus, in the somewhat hefty Mark V, there isn't much recoil. Outdated? Yeah, I suppose. A great round in a great rifle? You betcha! |

I'm a huge qurterbore fan anyway, so it's my destiny to put one together at some point.
