Thank you, I get sick and tried of when posts get shut down because someone says SHTF THREAD! and then people think EOTW lol. I do not believe in zombies, so if I started a SHTF thread it would not be about that. I am talking about disasters. IE, tornado/hurricane. And why on earth would you want to fantisy about EOTW as we know it, no more making of guns and ammo, that day does not sound like fun! I go with the COLT better name brand. Quote:

My 2 cents...
I went to a Gunshow over the weekend. i saw some DPMs rifles for around $100.00. A couple of vendors had some Stag and Bushmaster M4 carbines/rifles for around about the same. I thought ..hhmm Colt's will probably be about $1600. A couple of tables over a vendor had Colt 6920s and other colt M4s for ....$1200.
So basically I've decided I'm going to keep my eyes peeled and get a Colt. |

Having lived through and worked the societal breakdown in hurricane Andrew, It just proved to me that everyone needs a good self defense gun. But the reality is that gun can be a 6 shot 38/357 mag or your 12 gauge bird gun. AR15s are fun and really nice if you use them for work but they aren't a necessity. As a previous poster stated a good chainsaw is a big help and from experience I'll tell you so is a good generator.
For those that really believe we are at the end, with an inevitable economic breakdown and ensuing SHTF senario on our horizon, all I can say is you weren't around in the late 70s when things were very similar. Go find a copy of the Robin Williams Flick "The Survivors" You'll have a good laugh and it will put our current situation and history in perspective. |

The seventies as bad as every double digit economic statistic there was doesn't compare with the last two years. There was still hope and Reagan restored that hope. American people now perceive that our country is self-destructing. There is no truth in government or in the media that is suppose to report the truth. Our government can't manage the budget and is spending uncontrollably like a drunken sailor( no offense ). I'm 62yrs. and I've never experienced the malaise and dissatisfaction the American people are feeling now.
America is the greatest country ever in history, but that great Hope and Change is fading fast. |

Excellent post FAL. So many of these posters are either too young or have gotten too old and their memory is gone. I remember first hand the race riots in New Jersey growing up. I remember the long gas lines in the 70's. People talk about 4% mortgage interest rates, and they have no idea that in the late 70's, mortgage rates were DOUBLE DIGITS!!! 11%. They don't realize we had 9% unemployment in the mid 70's and double digit unemployment in the mid-80's.
So many people have absolutely no idea how economics and the economy works. They don't understand it's cyclical. The truth behind all this is: "There's a lot of paranoid people out there". Do I believe in having a gun for self defense? Yes. I was there for the race riots. But as mentioned, you don't need an AR. A revolver or other handgun will work for that. Your favorite 30-30 hunting rifle will work. Unfortunately, there's too many who believe that "Red-Dawn" is a real possibility. They don't realize that "Die-Hard" is just a movie. They take a scenario like Katrina, and make it sound like it's some unique scenario. Like it never happened before. And of course, they conveniently leave out the part where the new orleans and state police confiscated many privately owned weapons. So the individuals didn't have a weapon to protect themselves in many circumstances anyway. Yes; "AFTER THE FACT"; the courts said that was illegal. But you can't tell the police that you're going to take them to court during an emergency. That's all after the fact. If the local authorities call up martial law, you may not have the protection you think you have. "That's one reason I believe in having at least 1 or 2 unregistered guns. In case the others are accounted for and taken". Then again; not everyone lives in a free state like I do. Point is; Katrina and such are not as much a real scenario for protecting yourself, as is that many are simply paranoid. And the person with their AR and 30-40 magazines filled is definitely paranoid. The AR is fine for home defense if that's what you want to use. So is your shotgun, revolver, or semi-auto pistol. Along with your Marlin lever action 30-30. And when some start debating the merits of one weapon over the other for home defense; and start talking mega-magazines for the "SHTF" (Katrina type scenarios); I realize how little some people know of the real world. It's a combination of "Funny as hell" and "Such a sad shame". If you're under 35 years old; sorry, but there is absolutely nothing new going on. Stop panicking. If you're over 60 years old, then remember to take your meds. Your Alzheimer is kicking in. If you're between 35-60, you should definitely know better. Stop being so damn paranoid. |

Good post christcorp.
I think its funny how as soon as four letters appear on a forum people think everyone is talking about some hair brained movie scenario. The way I see it the whole "shtf" thing falls under 3 catagories. the never gonna happen: 28 day's later, 2012 stuff, alien invasion, movie bs the real: 127 hours/Aron Ralston scenario, wilderness survival, your home burns down, violent crime etc.. And the It happened but isn't likey to be repeated: The north hollywood shootout, 9/11 type events. Notice how none of these scenario's outcome's can be changed by having a gun with the possible exception of the "violent crime". It is good to see many people here have a level head and can tell the difference. |

I agree that an economic calamity in this country would be a catalyst that sets off a four letter scene. The collapse of the free market capitalistic economy would set the stage for the survival of the strong or who has the best guns and most ammo. This would start the beginning of socialism or communism. This is an almost unthinkable improbable scenario in most Americans minds but it is not entirely impossible of happening. Just look at past history at what has happened to governments. There are people that live in America that hates Capitalism and are very active in government and behind scenes that are planning the demise of America's economy.
God forbid that our American way life that we've known for over 200 yrs comes to an end by an economic collapse. Talking about a four letter scene! |
