BTDT and I NEVER would have used the grease method. If it doesn't work, you'll have even more problems on your hands!

The method of removing the nipple and pouring in powder is the best method and perfectly safe.

Don't worry about using too much powder. You can't fit enough powder under the nipple to cause problems. All you need is enough clearance to screw in the nipple all the way.

Push the jag as far in as it will go, pour powder into the drum, install nipple, cap and fire. The jag will shoot out the barrel like a squib load. It will bounce off the ground a few yards ahead. But make sure you have the gun pointed in a safe direction.

This method never failed me nor required me to buy special tools,

Shot a cleaning jag out of a .54 once.
Thing got jammed up, out in the woods. Pulled the drum screw and added a little powder, cleared the bore and reloaded.

Reporting back, sorry it took so long. We shot the jag out and it came out fine, going to jb weild the tip back to the rod. Thanks for everbodys help.
