Single stage or hand primer better?
I too bought a brick of them during the Great Component Shortage, and I have had way too many seating problems with my Hornady LNL AP. I have a hand primer as well as a single stage (bought the Hornady Classic kit before the LNL). Would I be better off using the hand primer, or does the single stage do a better job seating these more evenly? I made up a batch to compare in 44 magnum, and the SD on the Wolf rounds was almost double the CCI's. I don't know if this was due to the primer itself or just uneven seating depth.
It will be a super pain in the butt to size all my cases on the LNL AP, then prime them all, and then toss them back into the case feeder for loading. I do want to use them up for plinking rounds, but all the extra work is quite a deterrent. I bought the feeder attachment for the Classic press a long time ago and never tried attaching it to the press. Maybe it's time! |

Some hand primers will give you more mechanical advantage, but variability in primer pockets is substantial, IME. If I feel a primer being hard to seat, I run the brass through my Dillon swager for military crimps. It opens them to a more uniform size and gets rid of the tight crimp issue in most instances.
Slower, but also effective is the primer pocket profile cutter for the Wilson trimmer. Everything slips smoothly into primer pockets it has kissed.

I'm on my last 1000 of Wolf Primers. No problems with 10,000 small pistol primers. No problems with 9,000 Large Pistol primers. All went bang and all were loaded on my Hornady LNL without a problem. EXCEPT, WHEN I FAILED TO SORT OUT S&B, AMERC OR WCC cases.
Finally found Winchester Primers for $99 at the last GUNSHOW.
