handloading my .300 ultra mag! where to start?

Been shooting my Remington 700 sendero .300 ultra mag for awhile now. $60.00 for a box of twenty is starting to get old. I knew this was going to be an issue before I bought it. I do believe its time to get into handloading!! duh! ITS TIME! All I know is that I'm gonna do it...thats all. Where should I start? Any recommendations on a relatively basic setup? Also, any thoughts on what types and sizes of bullets...powders, etc. I bought this rifle to go out past 1000 yards and I think handloading is the ONLY way to go. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that half the fun of long rang shooting? Experimenting with different combinations to find that perfect mix that the rifle loves and shoots best??

Get a single stage starter kit from one of the major makers and go from there. Most of the starter kits have a comprehensive manual that gives step by step directions, along with commentary and explanations. Your shooting life is about to change, as is your understanding of what really happens when you pull the trigger.

I purchased the RCBS supreme kit three years ago at the local Sheels, it was about $260, and included everything but dies, shellholder, powder and primers. You will need a trim die or case trimmer. Magnum rifles stretch necks pretty badly, I reload for 300WBY and 340 WBY, amoung others. I would urge caution using Remington brass though. I found some Rem brass for the 300WBY at half the price of the Norma brass and was very disappointed with it. I load kind of hot and with one load, 190 gr Hornady jspbt, 86 gr RL 25, and the primer pocket stretched to the point that it will not accept a primer, I only loaded 10 and have since pulled bullets from the rest, and reduced charge considerably. WBY factory brass handles this load easily. I took this this load directly from Hornady reloading manual so was surprised by signs of higher than expected pressure. Start with min loads and work up cautiously looking for signs of excessive pressure. A Speer manual comes with the mentioned kit ,and explains in detail what to look for. Good luck and you will be hooked, on your own custom loads that you won't find in any store.
