Old Red Dot Powder

Has anyone experienced severe smoking in their revolvers with the old-type Red Dot powder??

I am still workin on a keg of Red Dot I bought in 1968. Is that old enough? I sealed it in quart glass jars with a waxed paper barrier over the top with lid screwed tight.

The only time I get "smoke" is with cast bullets, and that is because of the lube being burned. It does have a distinctive aroma though, with cast or jacketed.

Regards, Shoney

The improved Red Dot is claimed to be cleaner. I love Red Dot for all kinds of revolver rounds. And have used it with great success in 45ACP with a 230 grain bullet. It does smoke like burning old socks with cast bullets. But so does most powders.

Most "powder smoke" is normally caused by bullet lube on lead bullets.

Well, I did notice some bad smoke with red dot. But with the new stuff is not so bad and 296 hardly smokes at all. JUst wondering if my gun/loads were screwy. Thanks for all the answers. Lee
