Double post,, but I didn't want it to get lost on the other page..

I need to know what these are...
I got another case of ammo for this one today, it was in a sealed can that looked just like the one in post #1.. So I thought it was the same ammo...

But when I opened it up, it was all this yellow tipped stuff,,,

Can somebody tell me what the yellow tips mean? The can and the brass are the same as the last case, only thing different the tips...

Yellow Tips...

Should mean "Lead Core Heavy Ball", bullet weight nominally 182 grains, muzzle velocity somewhere between 2550 and 2620 fps from your 91/30.

Thanks Jimro... Do you know what the original purpose of these rounds was?

Standard ball ammo, not specialty sniper like like 7n1.

But the bullet weight is in the right range for most Mosin's to shoot well. I handled a 1943 MN PU sniper the other day that the owner uses for deer season, Winchester 180 grainers are 1 MOA from his rifle. Not bad at all for an antique.

The can was identical to the one in post #1, even the paper wrappers and string are the same. I was told that it is Romanian when I bought the first case...

I'm going to try some of it out today, we'll see how it acts....

I've got some '87 Soviet light ball I'll throw in when I ship your stock back to you. It's all I've ever shot, but I've heard it's pretty good stuff.

Bennnn,
I can't identify that ammo's country of origin by sight, but as Jimro mentioned it's definitely heavy ball. You should notice a 'slight push' of recoil when you fire it. Go over to 7.62x54r.net and scroll down to their ammo page. You can identify all of the common surplus (plus some commercial) by the headstamp. Some even have brief reviews. You should be able to tell country of origin, weight, and year produced.
Keep us posted.

Heck yeah,,, Thanks a lot!
I'm going out to shoot some of it tomorrow, I got tied up with some other stuff today,,,( just picked up my Taurus 1911)..

The guy I bought this rifle from is going to come check it out tomorrow,,

I cleaned all the cosmoline out of it...
The trigger is a lot better. (shim and buff)
I changed several parts out for other ones. (bolt, mag, trigger, but not the trigger spring..)
I re-crowned the barrel.
The sights are adjusted for 100 yards right now...
I've got some good ammo...

The package and cartridge look identical to the Bulgarian yellowtip I just got from Wideners

Haven't shot it yet, but bought it because of the excellent word of mouth I've been hearing.

I took the rifle this thread is about out today, and let the guy I got it from shoot it a little to check out what I've done with it so far.
We had a good range day with a few other rifles,, but before we packed up for the day I decided to put up one of those tacticool "man" targets at 80 yards,, just to see what this old girl would do..
I used the yellow tip ammo, seated on the ground. I put ten rounds into the body portion and ten at the black "head".
And guys, I wasn't messing around,, the two mags I put into the body were layed down in less than a minute and 1/2 total... Loading included..
Out of ten rounds, 5 were in the 10 range, two were in #9 one in #8, and two wingers that would have took the poor dudes arm off...
As to the ten I threw at the head, the barrel was so hot by then, ( it was pretty warm before this little tourture test already!!) I was squinting through heat waves that were making the front sight blurry... But five out of ten were printed in an almost straight line across the "forehead", one in the "ear" area, one in the neck, and one on either side of the "head", in line with the first five... I want to brag on this rifle a little, the two misses on the head shot test were only about 1/2" outside the black, and probably my fault...

Good day at the range, How's the stock coming Hedley?

Benn...I've been trying to call you all weekend! Your stock is came out incredible. I was dissapointed with the way it came out at first, so I started from scratch Saturday morning. Last night I applied the second coat of oil and buffed the hell out of it this morning. Smooth as glass my friend. I'll get some pics to you tonight. It's at a semi-gloss right now, but I can add additional coats if you want. The handguard and stock color is a perfect match.

Either way, I should be able to get it too you by late this week/early next week.

Total time spent: 14 hours not including oil and buff time.

Sound great Hedley! I should have givin you my cel #, sorry buddy.. It'll be in your PM box..

Man, you've been working your butt off on this old commie tree trunk buddy...
I'm going to make it worth your while my friend....... Look for the next parcel later in the week...

I have to dissapoint the pic fiends that are craving their next fix,,, my buddy's kid put about 50 .22's into that target this afternoon.... Dang it..
Pup10range was sitting behind me during the "mini tourture test",, and checked the paper with me,, maybe he'll give you guys some details...
During the first ten rounds, he was saying something like, "hey man, this ain't trench warfare..."

This is better than rebuilding a truck....

But I'll have some good stuff for you before and after the stock bedding project....

Since we're showing pics of Ford trucks,,, I'll post a pic of some SALVAGE...

This is every round (-20) that has been fired from this rifle since the day I got it... I'm actually going to count them when it's all over with...

I just let those last twenty fall on Sunday morning.....

Pup10range drives a chevy Hedley,, we gotta help him out....

Ok here she is. Let me know if you want one or two additional top coats.
Personally, I think I should add on more to the handguard. I buffed it down with 0000 steel wool to take some of the sheen off, but it's still a nice semi-gloss oil finish. Give me some imput.

First of all; The "B" made it unscathed.

And I polished and reblued the band retaining clips nice and dark(Did the same for the handguard caps):

Indoor lightning doesn't do the grain/color justice:

Had to put the "before" for added effect:

Well, what do think?

So is it up to your standards, or do you want more shine? Here's what it looks like with the flash. Imagine what it does in the sun...I personally think 3 coats is good enough to last another 60 years, but you're the boss.

If you like it as is, I can have it to you Thursday.

Edit-got your pm. Will add another coat to the hg, buff it tomorrow morning, and overnight it to you tomorrow evening.

Ok, here's what should be on your doorstep tomorrow afternoon. Seven coats of tung should hold it over for another 65 years. I hope you like it.

And I'll sleep better once I know it gets there safely. It should take you about a half hour to unwrap the 10 pounds of bubble wrap.

And it came out pretty darn close to my inspirational picture that we both agreed on:

I like it Hedley... Honestly, I think yours looks better than the other pic..

Now it's time for me to get busy with the rest.

Thanks to Hedley, I can stop carrying this poor old rifle around like this;
