Rifle registration question

I recently had an opertunity to buy an AR15 from an out-of state friend. My question is this: if I payed cash for it, took possesion of it, used and enjoyed it, but never did the paper work, what would be the legal ramifications? My worst fear is that if stolen, my insurance company would not replace it. My friend moves around alot and does not care what I do.

how would the insurance company know you didn't buy it from someone in your state?

For insurance: Line up all your guns on the floor and take a picture of them. Now add a sign with the date on it. Now add the make, model and serial number on a sign next to each firearm. Develope and keep each of the three pictures. This is all that is requrired and very handy.

Legal: Ask your friend when he bought the gun. Add six months to this and make out a receipt and have him sign it.
a) Back dating it will help in that most laws are rather new.
b) Showing a valid $$ amount shows that you paid a normal market price. This is important.
c) By having a signed receipt with a valid $$ amount, you can never be charged with recieving stolen property. If he won't give the receipt, don't buy it. NEVER buy a stolen gun as that hurts everyone.
d) As each of your weapons slowly become illegal, and they will, keep them in a separate and well hidden safe.

...Always buy lots of ammo.
