9mm load using w231

[RDF]

Anybody got a load using W231, with 115gr and 124gr bullets. Will be for target and plinking use.

For 124 gr., I load mine up to max charge to make the 125 powerfactor for IDPA and IPSC. I think it is about 4.4 gr. As a warning, always start with reduce loads when working up to max loads.

4.3 of 231 behind a 124 grain plated bullet, OAL 1.135 to 1.140 is my standard target load.

I use 4.5gr of W231 for 115 grain bullet. No problems and cycles several different weapons fine.

I also use 4.5 gr of 231 with a 115 gr plated bullet. Never had a reason to change the practice load, works in everything I've tried it in.

Here are a few good practice loads. All velocities are 10-shot averages, my own chrono data, from a short barrel (3.5"):

5.0 gr. Win 231, 115 gr. Win FMJ-RN, CCI 500, any case, 1.135" OAL @ 980 fps (a light load, but it cycles fine; accurate too)

5.1 gr. Win 231, 124 gr. Hornady FMJ-FP, CCI 500, any case, 1095 fps (this load duplicates M882 Ball (9mm NATO) ammo performance from the same gun)

FYI, Winchester's maximum recommended charges are:

115gr: 4.9gr of 231
124gr: 4.5gr of 231

5.0gr of Win231 with 115gr Remington JHP with Winchester SP primer loaded to 1.100" OAL. Gets 1,160 fps from 92FS

Same as above but with 5.2gr Win231 gives 1,200fps from 92FS.

I wish I could find the chronograph results from this load, but I recall the average velocity being about 1090 (from a full size USP) with a standard deviation of only about 10fps.

I use 4.8-4.9 grains of Win 231 behind a Star 115 FMJ bullet. I find that 4.5 grains and below will not reliably cycle my Glock 19.

just curious, but are you using the stock recoil spring? If so, it's interesting to me how each gun can be so different. The 4.3 load I mentioned above is for use in my Glock 19 with stock spring, as well as other 9 mils I have. It functions perfectly in the 19. I did try to go down to 4.1 grains as a light load for my wife, but immediately ran into cycling problems, and had to go back to 4.3.

LIProgram- Loads of 1095 fps for a 124 gr bullet don't even come close to duplicating M882 NATO ball. The M882 spec's at no less than 1215 fps and ranges higher in most cases. Tree Rat.

Hornady XTP 124 hollow point 4.5 W231 OAL 1.120 Lee Factory Crimp Die. This produces match grade bullets for my Ruger P95 and Beretta FS 92 Inox.

For Target and plinking rounds just change to a good Plated bullet. I like west Coast 124 FP same loading data.

I use 124 RNP West Coast FP Bullets over 4.1Gr W231 OAL 1.135 for my wife and have no problems at all in the ruger or the beretta.

The powder data is A MAX load in most of my reloading manuals

Hey Fred,

AFAIK it is a stock spring. My G19 was a factory refurb so for all I know the former owner (a policeman in NJ, they gave me the original receipt) could have replaced it somewhere along the line but it looks to me like a stock spring.

I found out that my G19 wouldn't handle the "light" loads in the worst way. I had gone to a week-long training class and my S&W M38 Airweight locked up on the second day of the shooting portion. I had brought my G19 as a backup but I didn't have enough ammo for the class (1,000 min for the whole week). I bought some of those 4.5 grain reloads off my buddy (they work fine in his Taurus PT99) and when I get to the class the next day I find out the rounds won't cycle my gun! Ended up buying factory rounds to finish the class.

Tree Rat, unlike looking solely at paper specs and drawing conclusions, I actually chrongraph loads.

From the same gun as the one from which I chronoed the Win231/124 grain load, current production US-surplus Ball M882 manufactured by Federal chronographed at 1101 fps (10 shot average), with an ES of 18.95 fps and a Sd of 5.91; temperature was 75 degrees F. Both the M882 and the handload were fired on the same day (minutes apart), from the same gun, over the same chrono.

If you noticed, I stated these velocities were from a short -- 3.5" -- barrel. One should expect that from the longer barrel of the M9 pistol (from which the spec'ed velocity is often cited), both of these loads should exceed 1200 fps.

I stand by my assertion that the handload is an M882 duplicate, at least from shorter barrels. Whether one pulls ahead of the other in significant fashion when fired from a longer barrel is something for a future test, but I'd bet anybody a beer they are still pretty darn close from barrels up to five inches.

Liprogun - Sorry I missed the important barrel length reference. My experiences have been with WCC (Olin) current production 98/99 headstamp from Glock 17 and H&K USP, and the M9 when they make me.
What is "Current Production Surplus" M882 Ball? Tree Rat.

I guess "current production surplus" could be considered an oxymoron. I consider anything made for the government that I get my hands on to be "surplus" because they apparently don't need it anymore.

IIRC, it was 1997 production, which was "current" (fresh) when I tested it.

Now that I've totally confused everybody...
